FTP and Archie lab


Part #1 - Using FTP to retrieve information and files


Using Anonymous FTP, complete the following....

Select three (3) of the following questions. Retrieve a document from each of the following sites you select for this assignment. Include a portion of the retrieved document you retrieved into the questions you completed. To enter FTP sites enter the URL while in NETSCAPE. Navigate through the site as you would any NETSCAPE menu. Include the path in the URL for easier access. View the document you plan to retrieve. Extra Credit available for doing one (1) additional site. Extra credit worth 3 pts.

Part #2 - Using ARCHIE to locate the location of FTP resources


Using ARCHIE, complete the following....

Find an FTP site where either Netscape or Mosaic software isavailable. Enclose a copy of some of the FTP sites you found below in theassignment sheet (lab).

1. You can access ARCHIE sites in several ways. The methods include using Telnet, email, or WWW. Use the following addresses to access ARCHIE sites.When using Telnet or Email refer to question #2 below for the steps needed toaccess these addresses.

2. Access one of the above ARCHIE servers.

    • Telnet Access method.
      1. Do not log into the VAX(Student.cerritos.edu) using QVT.
      2. Open the QVT VAX(Student.cerritos.edu) icon.
      3. When the initial log on screen appears, click on File then Exit. This will close the log on window and produce a QVT strip.
      4. Click on the Terminal symbol on the above mentioned strip.
      5. The 'Start Terminal Session' dialog box appears.
      6. Enter the Telnet address (given above) in the 'Host Address or IP Address' box.
      7. Click on MSC in the 'Configuration' box. Then click OK.
      8. The log in should be 'ARCHIE'
      9. To retrieve informationusing a string/topic search TYPE the following command string.
        prog topic(enter) Where topic is replaced with the topic you are looking for.
        If you get more than one page of information you will get a prompt. Press the (space bar) to page through the information or CTRL-F to page down and CTRL-B to page back.

          To exit at the :
          prompt to get back to the archie> type q

      10. Once you have found information and would like a copy of the sites mailed to your address.

          Enter thefollowing command. archie>mail
          xxxxx001@cerritos.edu (where xxxxx001is your user ID)

    • Email Method
      1. Enter the EMAIL system.
      2. At the TO: prompt
        • type archie@domain
        • Where the domain is what was given above.
      3. You do not need a subject.
      4. Include in the body of the message the following: prog topic (enter)
        where 'topic' is the area of interest or file you are looking for thelocation.
      5. You will receive the results in your email.
      6. You can cut and paste from your email to the assignment.
    • WWW Method
      1. Find the locations and cut and paste them into your assignment.
