General Information

General Introduction


This class is an introduction to the various resources available over the Internet.  It will cover the use of e-mail, the World Wide Web, Telnet, Listserv's, Mailing Lists, Newsgroups, File Transfer, Creation of a basic web personal home page and Gopher.  Yes, there is more to the Internet than just the Web.  Once you explore these resources, you will become familiar with which resource should be used to find what you are looking for.  This class will help you with researching and retrieving a vast amount of information available over the Internet.  It is aimed at the student who is self motivated, who needs a flexible schedule and who works well independently.  I believe you will find your exploration of the Internet an exciting and worthwhile adventure.  I am looking forward to having you in class and communicating with you through the use of technology.  

Information for this class will be found on the class web page.   I expect you to reference this page on a regular basis.  Changes to the schedule, announcements, dates for exams are posted there and the responsibility of the student to access.  make special note of dates for exams and due dates for assignments.  If there are problems meeting any of these dates you MUST contact me before the date and work out needed arrangements.

Note:  My web page is best viewed through Netscape Navigator.  If you are having problems viewing the pages using Internet Explore, please notify me so that I can make changes to resolve these problems.  

Attendance and Class contact

  1. Students are expected to communicate with the instructor at least once EVERY week.  This communication can take the following forms:  submit an assignment, send an email for help or clarification, or just sent an email indication where you are in your course progress.
  2. If I do not hear from you for a protracted period of time, I will assume you are planning to NOT complete the class. In this case you will be DROPPED.
  3. This is a class which requires students to do the work consistently each week.   This class is short and there is NOT excessive time to complete the work.  You should plan to be doing and submitting your assignments each week.

 

Retrieving Lectures, Assignment, and Handouts

  1. Lectures, Lab Assignments, Written Assignment, Syllabus and Help documents will all be posted to the class home page.  http://www.cerritos.edu/hohly/online/b82Sp99ol.htm
  2. You will be expected to go to the home page and retrieve the assignments.  You should print out the lab instruction and have them available while doing the labs.
  3. You will need to save to diskette the lab submission sheets.  These files will be used to insert the answers to your lab assignment.  Once the submission sheets are completed they will be emailed to your instructor.  To email them using the Cerritos College use cut and paste method.  This methods works with other mail systems also.  You may want to submit your assignments as attachments with many of the commercial Internet Service Providers.
  4. You should use the NOTEPAD or another editor to enter the answer to the assignments on the submissions sheets.
  5. You will need to save the labs as your working on them to  diskettes or a designated location on YOUR computers hard drive.  NOTE:  DO NOT STORE ANY OF YOUR WORK ON THE COLLEGES COMPUTER HARD DRIVES.)

Submitting Assignments

  1. ALL assignments MUST be submitted by email.  No Assignment will be accepted on traditional paper.  The only exception to this procedure is the submission of the actual original article or copy of the article used for the written assignment.
  2. The written assignments original article (or copy of the article) may be placed in my campus mailbox or mailed to me.  If the original article is available electronically it may be emailed to me in place of being submitted in hard copy.  The written assignment summary is submitted via email on the submission form.
  3. Once an assignment has been submitted, a return email will be sent with the points for that assignment.  If you did not get full credit or did not choose to do the bonus portion at that time, you may resubmit the assignment ONLY ONCE  for reevaluation and additional point.
  4. The assignments are written with instruction for the Cerritos College computer system.  If you are using another Internet Service Provider you will have to make adjustments.

Exams

  1. The midterm and final will be given online.  The exact dates for these exams will be posted later in the course.  The midterm will take place during the 5th week and the final will be during the 9th week.
  2. The midterm and final will be posted to the web page for a fixed time period and then removed from the web page.  Students will be expected to access the exams from the web page during that time period.
  3. The exams will be open book and open notes.
  4. It is expected that students will take the exam by themselves and not with the counsel of others.  Honesty is expected.
  5. The exams will submit your test answers directly to your instructor.
  6. Student who will not be available during the exam time period MUST contact the Instructor prior to the exam and make other arrangements.

Help/Questions

  1. A variety of help documents are made available on the class web page.  You might want to refer to them when you first have question on a particular topic.

Computer Access

  1. Students will all be given a Cerritos College account.  You may use that account or any other account that you have available to you.  If you plan to use accounts other than your Cerritos College account you MUST email or otherwise notify your instructor of your other email address.  You must also enroll in the class mailing list (BI-List@cerritos.edu) from that account.
  2. If you do not have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) you should consider getting a FREE hot mail account. Hot mail accounts are available at http://www.hotmail.com.   If you use a Hot Mail account, make sure to email your instructor so that she may get your address. 
  3. If your account does not contain your name you must ALWAYS include your name on the first line of your assignment.
  4. You may use the computer in either the LA-3, LA-4, LA-5,  LA-6,  in the Learning Resource Center or CAI (LAP) computer labs to complete your assignments.  The CAI/LAP lab is located in the Learning Resource Center portion of the Library.  Use of the campus labs is an option but not required.
  5. You will need to email your instructor each week as to the number of hours you spend doing lab work that week.

  2. Remember that if you have questions, email me with them and I will get back to you with a response to your questions.
  3. If your questions appears to be a question others in the class might have, submit your questions through the class mailing list (bi-list@cerritos.edu).

Lecture and Supporting Material

  1. Most, if not all, lectures will be made available on the class web page.
  2. Notes on these lectures (if available) will be send to the Mailing List BI-list@cerritos.edu.  This is the Listserv for the class.  Note some lectures will have supplemental notes.
  3. Questions on lectures should be sent to the BI-list@cerritos.edu as others in the class may have the same questions.  If you feel more comfortable sending questions directly to me that is fine.  If it is general in nature I may choose to answer via the BI-list@cerritos.edu for the benefit of all.
  4. When new materials other than normal lectures and labs are posted to the web site I will notify you via the BI-list@cerritos.edu mailing list.
