Part #2 - Using Telnet to find information

When doing telnet, remember that you are at a remote computer and the key strokes must match those of the remote computer not Cerritos. Be careful to use the proper case. Use the help function to determine the commands at the remote computer.  Before going to a remote or just when you first arrive at a remote site, determine what must be typed to exit the remote system.  It can be very frustrating when you can't figure how to exit a remote site.

Use one of the following methods to do this lab.

Method 1: Using telnet through your browser

Open up your browser.

In the Location (go to:) space type in the following:
telnet://address    (where 'address' is the internet address for the remote computer)

Press enter.

A telnet session window will open and you will be asked to login.

Method 2: Using telnet at DOS prompt

Click on 'START', next click on 'PROGRAMS'

Then click on 'MS-DOS command' or 'Command Prompt'

Enter the following:
c:\>telnet  address   (where 'address' is the internet address for the remote computer)

Press enter

A telnet session window will open and you will be asked to login.

Method 3: Using telnet through your ISP

Depending your internet provider, many of them will have a telnet option available to you.

Often there is a button or icon for telnet.  If this is the case click on this symbol to start telnet.

You might need to use the help features of your provider to find out how to access telnet.

Method 4: Using QVT telnet from Cerritos College terminal To do this portion of this assignment open the Alpha Terminal session.

Click on the Alpha (Terminal) connection.

When the Sign-on prompt appears, click on 'File' then click on 'Open'.

This will bring up the 'Start Terminal Session' dialog box.  Enter the address you want to connect to in the space at the left (Host name or IP address).

In the Right box (configuration) select 'default', then click OK. This will connect you with the remote site.
