Lab 3 - World Wide Web
Exploration of the Web and Cerritos College Home page
Using Netscape and/or Microsoft Explorer

The purpose of the lab is to explore the World Wide Web and the Cerritos College Home page.
Objectives: The student will be able to:
  • Navigate the World Wide Web using Netscape and/or Internet Explorer.
  • Explore the features of Netscape and/or Internet Explorer.
  • Find information related to your interest.
  • Cut and Paste information from the Web into your assignment file.
  • Set bookmarks.
  • General Instructions:
  • Include the answers to this lab on the submission sheet. Insert your answers under the questions requesting answers.
  • Since there are choices of questions to answer, please delete the unanswered questions before submitting your completed assignment.
  • When you find information of interest, you will find it useful to set a bookmark. If working from home your bookmarks will be saved to your C: drive.   If you are working at the College make sure that the bookmark file is saved to your diskette in the A: drive.
  • You may select two (2) additional questions for extra credit. This will provide a maximum of 6 pts (3 pts each) of bonus credit.

    Part #1 - Access the Cerritos College Library.

    The access to the Cerritos College Library is a great opportunity for all student and faculty alike. The web browser allows you to find both books and journal articles. The latter resource, journal articles, provides you access to not only magazines in the our library, as well as, articles not available in our library. A large portion of journal articles are available in full text on-line.

    Enjoy this exercise in using the library through the Internet. Note that the journal search is NOT available from off campus sites, so do this portion on campus.
    Do ONE (1) of the library searches below.

    1. Open up Netscape and/or Internet Explorer. The initial home page is 'Cerritos College Home Page.'  If not enter the following address in the Location: box in the menu bars of the browser.  http://www.cerritos.edu/
    2. Move down and take the 'Cerritos College Library' link.
    3. Perform a search for one (1) book on a topic of your choice. Click on 'Search the Catalog' button.  Click on one of the Search buttons: 'Search by Subject',  'Search by Author', 'Search by Title', or 'Word or Words.'



    4. List the search topic (criteria) you choose.
      Provide one citations you found on your topic, this includes the full Bibliographical information, location, call number and availability.
      Return to the main College Library menu.
    Do the next question from on campus ONLY.
    1. This section needs to be done from on campus.
    2. From the main menu click on 'EBSCO Host' to begin a journal/magazine search.  Remember a search of the journal/magazines library resources is only available from on campus.
    3. Select a topic to search for articles.





    4. List the search topic you choose.
      You will find that some of the articles listed will have an open book before them. These are articles which contain the full text. All articles have an abstract available.
      Include the abstract from an article you found interesting.

      Part #2 - Exploring the Cerritos College Home page sites

      Select one (1) from the following choices:
      Return to the Cerritos College Home page.

      1. Click on 'Schedule of Classes'.






      2. Click on 'List of academic departments'.
        Click on the department of choice.
        Find a class being offered during the current semester or next semester .
        List the number and name of the class. 
        Include the schedule information about the class offering.
        Use the 'Distance Education Program' Link to select to find a course being offered during the current or next semester in this program.



        What is the Course number and name?
        Who is the Instructor?
        Include some information about this class.
        Click on the 'Title III' Link.  Find a course (pair of classes) which are being offered in this program.



        Which semester did you select?
        What Learning Community did you select?  Provide the community name.
        What courses make up this Learning Community?

        What zip code did you use?
        From the 'Internet Resources' page, select the 'California State Assembly.' Select the 'Find my District' link, use the address of your home, work, or another address find the location on the map and insert the information about who is your representative.
