Internet
Lab Assignment #1

Using email to communicate with others.
Lab 1 - Objectives:
The student will be able to:
- Register for a Hotmail account (optional - use if you don't have and
Internet Service Provider).
- Log on to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and/or your Hotmail
account.
- Send a mail message using either the your Internet Service Provider or
your Hotmail account.
- Reply to a previously received email message.
- Forward a message.
Note: This assignment can be done using any Internet
Providers email systems. The methods will vary with each provider. The
tasks to be performed are the same regardless of the provider.

Part #1 Register for a Hotmail
e-mail account
(Optional section)

- Note: If you already have an email account you like or a Hotmail email
account, go directly to Part #2
- Power on the computer and monitor if it is not already powered on. You
will need to wait a few minutes if the system is not powered on. Please be
patient.
- In the CIS lab(s) (LA-3, LA-4, LA-5, LA-6), or other computer labs, or
from your home over your Internet Service Provider (ISP), click on the icon
for either Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.
- In the Location window type the following Internet
address.
http://www.hotmail.com
- Click on the 'Sign up Here.' Tab through the registration
questionnaire. You will be asked for a user ID. Select something
which you will remember; it can be a tag, nickname, moniker, or a user
ID for another system.
- You will next be asked to enter a password. Select something that
will be easy for you to remember but not easy for other to guess. You
should make sure that you write down your User ID for future use (keep your
password separate).
- You will be asked to review a document defining the terms of a free email
account with Hotmail. Read this through so that you understand the
terms.

Part #2 - Creating and sending a mail
message

Method #1 - Using Hotmail to create and
send a message
- If you are not currently logged into Hotmail account do steps 2-4,
otherwise skip to step 5.
- Open one of the web browsers, either Netscape Navigator or Internet
Explorer.
- Enter the Hotmail URL (http://www.hotmail.com).
- Enter your user name and password then press ENTER.
- Click on 'compose' on the left of your screen and press ENTER.
- At the 'compose-a-message' screen, complete the remaining prompts as
follows:
To: Hohly@cerritos.edu
CC:
type your user ID (xxxxxx@hotmail.com)
Subject: type 'Lab #1 Your Last Name'
Enter a
brief message including an interesting fact about yourself. You
might tell me your idea of a fun vacation or where you would like to go
on vacation.
For example, I am Marge Hohly and one of my hobbies is photography. Or I'm
Marge Hohly and I enjoy traveling. Or your name and ........
- You should SPELL-CHECK your message before you send it.
- When you are done with your message CLICK on the SEND button at the bottom
of your message.
- . You will receive points for this section of the lab by email when you
send your message.
Method #2: Create and send a message with
your email system.
- >Log on to your ISP.
- Open your mail system. (This is either done by clicking on an icon
for sending a message or use a drop down menu to send a message).
- Select the Compose/Write/Create a message icon, this will bring up a form
to write/compose a message.
- Complete the the following sections of your message form as follows:
To:
Hohly@cerritos.edu
(press enter key. This will send a mail message to
Hohly at Cerritos College.)
CC:
type your user ID and press enter.
Subject: type 'Lab #1 Your Last Name'.
Enter a brief message including an interesting fact about yourself.
You might tell me your idea of a fun vacation or where you would like to go on
vacation.
For example, I am Marge Hohly and one of my hobbies is photography. Or I'm
Marge Hohly and I enjoy traveling. Or your name and ........
- When you are done with your message click on the send icon.
This will send the message to your instructor and a copy to you.
- You will receive points for this section of the lab by email when you send
your message.

Part #3 - Replying to a
previously received message.

- Enter your mail system.
- Select the icon to read your mail.
- Open and read the "Lab 1 reply" message sent to you by your instructor.
- ,Click on the reply icon/feature of your email system.
- Insert your answers below each questions in the message you
received.
While reading the message you can insert your reply after
each question.
Place your cursor below the question and press enter. This
will open up a spot for your reply.
- Then click on the send icon/button. This will send your message.
- Then continure with the next section.
You will receive points for this section of the lab by email when
you send your message.

Part #4 - Forwarding a message

- You will have received a 'Welcome' message from your instructor once
she/he has your email address. Your instructor will not know your email
message until she/he has received a message from you.
- You will be asked to forward this message back to your instructor or any
other message you have received. This is to practice forwarding
messages.
- While reading the message, click on the forward button.
- This will bring up a window that asks you to enter the email address to
send this message to.
Enter the following:
To:'Hohly@cerritos.edu'
CC:
to mailto:xxxxxx@hotmail.com.
- Next you will need to click on the send button. This will actually
forward the message.
- If you do not have this message, email your instructor. Request the
she/he send you another copy or ask a fellow student to forward a copy
to you.
You will receive points for this section of the lab by email when
you send your message.

Part #5 - Summary of submitted items and
points for lab 1

You will have submitted the following items for lab 1. You will
receive individual messages indicating the points for each section.
- Send a message (10 pts.)
- Reply to a message (10 pts.)
- Forward a message (10 pts.)
