BCIS 82 - Introduction to the
Internet
Lab Assignment #2
Using Windows to edit and email files to your instructor via either your
email account. Use either your Internet Service Provider (ISP),
hotmail, or other email account.
Lab 2: Objectives:
The student will be able to:
- Retrieve a file from the Internet (class web page) using Microsoft
Internet Explorer or Netscape.
- Save the file to your diskette located in the A: drive.
- Print a copy of the lab assignment instructions located on the class web
page through Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape.
- Use the Windows Notepad to complete/edit the retrieved form/file.
- Use Windows Copy/Paste function to submit Lab 2 form. (Note: You
should learn the cut/paste method for future assignments. It is also
possible to send assignments as attachments via your Internet Service
Provider.)
Part #1 - How to Retrieve a
form/file
- Power on the computer and monitor if it is not already powered on. Connect
to the Internet.
- Click on the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape icon. This will bring
you to the home page for Cerritos College. (The address for Cerritos College
is http://www.cerritos.edu).
- Click on 'Faculty and Staff Pages' link.
- Scroll down, then click on 'Margaret Hohly' under 'SEM Division'.
- Click on the link for this class. (Note: this is Fall 1999 - BCIS 82
online 2nd nine weeks). This will take you to the class web page.
- Click the link for lab 2.
- You might want to print these instructions to refer to while doing the
assignment.
- Return to the class web page using the back arrows.
- Click on 'Lab 2 - Form'.
- You will need your diskette in the A: drive. Then, in Microsoft Internet
Explorer or Netscape click on 'FILE' then 'Save As'. Have a formatted 3.5"
diskette in the floppy disk drive (A:). In the dialog box which appears make
the following changes.
- In
the box under 'File name' and enter the change the filename to LAB2.TXT
.
- Next, under DRIVE click, then change the drive to
'A drive'.
- Click on OK. You should note the light goes on the
A: drive.

Part #2 - Using an editor to complete Lab
2 form
- You will need to use an editor to complete this form. Use either Notepad,
Microsoft Word, or DOS editor to complete this form. The form is the file you
saved as LAB2.TXT on your diskette. (Note: Notepad is located in the
Accessories folder found on your 'Start' menu. Notepad is the preferred
editor.)
- If you do not complete the form at one time, save the partially completed
form on your diskette. When you are ready to continue, open this
file and continue editing until it is complete. Always save your
progress on your diskette.
- When your assignment form is completed you are ready to submit it to your
instructor. Proceed to part #3.

Part #3 - Submitting your completed
assignment form using email
- Open up the Notepad program. Load the copy of your assignment into the
Notepad. Complete the answers to the questions on the form.
- Click on EDIT, then click on SELECT ALL.
- Click on EDIT then Click on COPY.
- Now you need to change to your email system.
- Open up a new message to be sent to your instructor.
- You will be asked to provide the address of the user you are sending this
document. Address this to your instructor: Hohly@cerritos.edu
- At the CC: press enter your address (Log-on ID). This will send a copy of
the completed assignment to you.
- At the Subject: Lab #2 form (Your last name)
- .Click the cursor in the message portion of the email.
- . Now click on EDIT on the menu bar of the window then Click on PASTE.
This should paste your assignment form into the mail message.
- . To send this document click on the send button.
Note: If using
an Internet Service provider (ISP), you may either use the 'cut and paste'
method or mail the assignment as an attachment.

Part #4 - Summary of submitted items and
points for lab 2
You will have submitted the following items for lab 2.
