Lab 5 - Introduction to the Internet
Using WWW Search tools to find Internet Resources

The purpose of this lab is to:

1. Use the Search Tools from the previous lab assignments.
2. Formulate search criteria to find information available on the World Wide Web.
3. Revise your search criteria until you find the desired information.

General Instructions:

1. Select five (5) of the following for full credit.
2. Read through the following 'Search Questions', then select the questions you want to explore.
3. Before you submit the assignment please delete the questions you did not answer. This will make grading easier.
4. This assignment has extra credit available. You may do two (2) extra question for a maximum of 6 bonus points (3 pts each).

Search Questions:

1. Find a site which has information about entitlement programs.  For example: social security, welfare, etc.  Look for sites which discuss reform of these programs.

2. Find a site with information on animal rights and/or animal welfare.

	What organization/site name did you find?

	Provide an example of information you found.

3. Find a web site which deals with the topic or viewpoint of abortion/right to life.

4. Find a site or information site available on Euthanasia 'the right to die' and/or 'assisted deaths.'?

	Include some information that you found at this site.

5. Find a site the has information on the 'right to privacy' type information.

	Provide the name and URL for the site. Include some information you found at this site.

6. Find a site which lists Internet 'Best Web Sites' or 'Top Internet sites'.
   For example: 'Top 5% sites' http://www.pointcom.com/categories/
   'Web 100' http://www.web100.com/
   'IPPA Design Site' (includes winning sites) http://www.ippa.org/
   Or other sites your find.

   	List the site you found which listed the 'Top Sites'. List two winners, including their URL.
   	Explore one site. Include something you found of interest?

7. Find a magazine or journal publishing site, which includes articles on-line. (Note: a newspaper site.) The magazine or publishing site may be either a traditional or on-line only site. Some examples: Ziff-Davis Publishing, Time, Business News, Barons, George, Vogue, Automobile mag., Better Homes and Gardens, Sports Illustrated, Hispanic On-line etc.

	What magazine or publishing site did you find. Find one (1) magazines (publications). Provide their name and URL.
	Explore one of the magazines. Give the name of an article you found. Include a portion of the article.

8. Find a newspaper web site. This site must provide access to information to the general public, thus note requiring a subscription for a fee. Some examples: Mercury News, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Times, All Politics, CNN, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, La Opinion, etc.

	Provide the name and URL of two sites you found.
	Explore one of the sites. Include information you found at this site?

9. Find a site which has information on 'Sexual Harassment.'

What is the URL and name of the site you found. Include information you found at this site.

10. Find the site that has information on 'El Nino.'

	What site did you find.
	What is the URL for this site?
	Include information which was available at this site.

11. Find the site for a National organization. For example:Conservation, employee, interest groups, Sports, etc.

12. Find the web site for a country outside the United States.

	What type of information is available at this site? Include some information you found.

13. Find a site which provides information on 'global warming' and or 'The greenhouse effect.'

14. Find the site of a political parties headquarters.

What political party did you select? What is the URL? Include some information you found.

15. Find a site with information on the 'Right to carry a gun' or gun control.

16. Find a site that has information on 'Civil Rights' issues.

17. Find a U.S. Federal Government site. The site should have information about a segment of either the Legislative, Executive, or Judicial branch of the government. (Some examples might be, Senate, Department of Labor, HUD, Supreme Court, Department of Commerce, Department of the Interior etc.)

18. Find a web site for a state government agency.

	What state and organization did you find?

	Provide an example of information you found. (You may pick any state.)

19. Find a web site for a city government. You may pick any city in any state in the United States.

	Provide an example of information you found.

20. Determine the Web address for a sports organization. For example, U.S. Open (Tennis), Ice skating, golf, football, Soccer, Amateur, professional, Major/minor league, etc.

	Include some information that you found at this site.

21. Find a media site. For example, Movie studio, radio, TV, a specific film, theater, guild, award (Oscar etc.), program, or organization.

22. Find a travel, tourism or vacation planning site. This can include Hotels, Airlines, trains, tour companies, travel agencies, etc.

23. Find a site which provides job, career, or employment information.

	What is the name and URL of the site you found.
	Explore at least one site. Include a job or career related information that you found at this site.

24. Explore major companies or corporations.

	Find the name and URL of two (2) major company or corporations.
	Explore at least one. Include information which this company or corporation offers at their site.

25. Find the site for a movie.

	What movie site did you find?
	What is the name of the movie you found?
	What is the URL for this site.
	Include information which was available at this site.

26. Find a site which provides information on one of your hobbies.

27. Find a financial site. This could include banks, loan companies, Federal Reserve Bank, etc.
