The Cerritos College
football team has announced four more players have
signed letters of intent, which brings their total
to eight of the 12 sophomores on the roster this
season. Heading the list of early signings were
offensive guard
Rameses Arceo (St. Paul HS), who will
be playing at the University of Kansas next season,
while wide receiver
Anthony Oliver (Cabrillo HS) will be
pulling in passes for Central Missouri State
University next year. On the defensive side,
cornerback
DeVon Walker (Gahr HS), who missed
several games this season with an injury, has signed
with the University of Nevada, with defensive end
Dan Kuykendall (Long Beach Millikan HS)
looking to make an impact at Portland State
University.
Recent signing include
the quartet of safety
Jamario McClain (El Rancho HS), who
will be going to Central Missouri State University,
defensive end
Jermaine Henderson (Downey HS), who
signed with Glenville (WV) State College, center
Clayton Caron (Laguna Beach HS), who
signed with Southeast Missouri State University and
offensive tackle
Eddie Simmons (Long Beach Poly HS),
who signed with New Mexico Highlands University.
Arceo was a 2nd
Team All-Mission Conference American Division
selection this season, as the Falcons rushed for
1,809 yards this year and threw for another 2,113
yards. He will now move on to a Kansas team that
defeated the University of Houston, 42-13 in the
Fort Worth Bowl recently and finished the season
7-5. The Jayhawk offensive line loses just one
member and is fairly young, so the addition of Arceo
was a key addition to their team. He is the first
offensive lineman the team signed for next season.
Oliver led the team with
32 receptions for 551 yards and five scores and
added five kickoff returns for 80 yards his
sophomore year to earn 2nd Team
All-Mission Conference American Division
recognition. As a freshman, he pulled in 35 passes
for 613 yards and four touchdowns, while earning
unanimous 1st Team All-Mission Conference
recognition. He broke the school record for most
career receiving yards with 1,164, which topped
current Cincinnati Bengal wide receiver T.J.
Houshmandzadeh, who amassed 1,152 in 1997-98.
His receptions his freshman year were the second
most on the team while he led them in receiving
yards and was voted the team’s Freshman of the Year.
Central Missouri, a Division II program, went 7-3
last season and averaged 230 yards a game in the air
while the Mules came in fourth place in the
Mid-American Intercollegiate Association. They lose
two wide receivers to graduation, including their
top two pass-catchers.
Walker appeared in the last
six games after missing the first four with an
injury and finished with 34 tackles, five pass
breakup and led the team with three forced fumbles
and picked off one pass. He was a starter in the
first five games of his freshman year, but an injury
sidelined him the remainder of the year. Prior to
his injury, Walker accumulated 32 tackles and one
interception. The Wolf Pack finished off their best
season (9-3) since 1996 after they defeated Central
Florida, 49-48 in the Hawaii Bowl recently and ended
the season on a five-game winning streak. With two
of their top three players in the secondary
graduating, Walker adds another solid coverage
cornerback to a team that allowed 270 a game through
the air.
Kuykendall, who originally
gave a verbal commitment to the University or
Oregon, was injured most of the season an was
limited to action in just six games and recorded 18
tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback
hurries and one quarterback sack. The two-year
defensive captain recorded 23 stops as a freshman
with four hurries, three tackles for loss, two
blocked kicks and two fumble recoveries. This past
season, the Vikings posted a 6-5 record, while the
defensive line included former Falcon Jimmy Ko,
who will welcome Kuykendall next season. They were a
solid defensive front and allowed only 125 yards a
game on the ground, but surrendered 240 yards a game
through the air.
McClain will join Oliver
and play for the Mules next season after earning 2nd
Team Mission Conference American Division
recognition. He led the team with 80 tackles and
added five breakup and two interceptions. Central
Missouri, a Division II program, went 7-3 last
season and have a young secondary, although two
safeties are graduating. On the season, they came in
fourth place in the Mid-American Intercollegiate
Association and allowed 194 yards a game through the
air.
Henderson led the
defensive line this past season with 47 tackles and
six quarterback sacks, five quarterback hurries and
two fumble recoveries. He joins a team that went 8-2
on the season and will be reunited up with Falcon
teammate Jacory Bradford, who was a starting
defensive lineman for the Pioneers last season.
Caron was a two-year
starter for the Falcons and Simmons saw a great deal
of time this past season after spending two years on
the practice squad. Caron was selected to the
all-conference team and has a chance to see a lot of
action next season. The Redhawks are very young on
their offensive line and do return a two-year
starting center and are coming off a 2-9 campaign.
Simmons will be joining a Cowboy team that went 1-10
last season, but lose four offensive linemen to
graduation. |
