The Cerritos College wrestling team had four
individual winners at the Southern California
Regional Championships at Santa Ana College on
Saturday, which propelled them to the team
championship. The Falcons, who are ranked #4 in the
state and won their second straight South Coast
Conference championship, advanced wrestlers in nine
of the 10 weight classifications for the state
championships, which will be held next weekend at
Fresno City College. Last season, Cerritos came in
fourth place in the state championships.
Winning their
respective weight classes were sophomore 125-pounder
Jason Carrillo (Torrance HS), who advanced to
the championship match last season, freshmen 133-pound
Paul Lyon (Shepherd (MI) HS) and 141-pound
Mike Koehnlein (Marina HS), along with
sophomore 197-pound
Al Kinslow (Santa Monica HS).
Last year, Kinslow placed eighth at the state
championships.
Cerritos
compiled 167.5 team points, which beat conference
opponents Palomar College (159 team points), East Los
Angeles College (132) and Santa Ana College (87), who
finished second through fourth in the team scoring.
Joining the Falcons with nine entries are both Palomar
and Santa Ana, while Fresno City College, who finished
second in the NoCal Championships, qualified all 10 of
their wrestlers. Northern California champion Sierra
College qualified nine, as did third place finisher
Lassen College.
Others who
advanced from the team include sophomores
David Razo
(La Quinta HS) and
Gene Choi (North
Torrance HS), who each placed third at 157 and 165
pounds, respectively, along with freshmen
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) and
Mike Mehegan
(West Torrance HS), who each finished fifth at
174 and 184 pounds. Freshman
Juan Enriquez (John
Glenn HS) round out the Cerritos roster, after he
came in second place at 285 pounds. |
