For the first time in school history, a Cerritos College men's doubles team reached the state championship match. The freshman doubles team of
Doug Edwards (
Western HS) and
Jason Wall (
Lakewood HS) capped off a tremendous season by reaching the finals of the California Community College Athletic Association Men's Doubles Championship, which was held at the El Dorado Tennis Center in Long Beach.
In order to even reach the championship match, the two had to
outlast
nemesis
Waylon
Bennett
and
Olumide
Sherman-Norman
of
Grossmont
College
in the
semi-finals.
The two
finally
put away
their
opponent,
but not
before
having
to
endure a
7-6 (5),
6-7 (5),
6-2
match
for the
right to
face
well-rested
Hassan
Abbas
and
James
Preston
of
Ventura
College.
With not
more
than a
few
minutes
to
compose
themselves,
the
#4-ranked
Edwards
and Wall
were
running
on empty
tanks
and
dropped
a 2-6,
4-6
decision
to the
#3-seeded
team.
Earlier
in the
season,
the
Pirate
duo
posted
an 8-6
win in a
non-conference
meet.
Edwards
and Wall
finished
their
season
with a
27-5
record
as a
doubles
team.
