Although
they won the South Coast Conference South
Division and finished the regular season on
a nine-game winning streak, the Cerritos
College men's basketball team will still
have to open the Southern California
Regional Playoffs on the road this
Wednesday. The Falcons were seeded #17 out
of 20 teams and will have to travel to
#16-seeded Los Angeles Valley College in a
7:00 p.m. matchup. The winner of the game
will have to face top-seeded Saddleback
College (25-7) on the road Saturday night.
The
Monarchs (16-11) were the third place team
in the Western State Conference South
Division and offer an interesting matchup
for Cerritos. Both teams are not very big
and rely on team speed and defense for their
success. The Falcons have received a great
deal of rebounding support from the entire
squad, led by freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence
HS), who averages 10.8 rebounds a game.
Sophomore guard
Van Girard (Gahr HS)
is second on the team in rebounding, while
more than half of his boards come on the
offensive end.
Curtis
Leslie leads LA Valley with 9.0 rebounds a
game and also averages 12.5 points a game.
As a team, the Monarchs have four players
scoring in double figures and are paced by
Chris Horstman and his 13 points a game.
