05.03.09 - SOFTBALL WASTES LITTLE TIME IN SWEEPING VENTURA
Photo by Juan Velez. Lauren Castrellon went 3-for-4 with three RBI's to help Cerritos sweep Ventura out of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.    The Cerritos College softball team wasted little time opening up a sizeable lead in their Southern California Regional Playoff game at Nancy Kelly Field on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and cruised their way to a 10-0, 5-inning win over Ventura College to advance to the Super Regional. Cerritos (37-9-1), who swept the Pirates and are seeded #2 in the playoffs, will host either Grossmont College or East Los Angeles College next Sayirday and Sunday at Cerritos. The Falcons are 1-1 on the year against Grossmont, while they went 4-0 against East LA, who is a member of the South Coast Conference.

The game started with freshman outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) lacing a triple down the right field line and then came home on a base hit up the middle by freshman shortstop Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS). A single by freshman catcher Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS) and a walk to sophomore outfielder Jennifer Salas (California HS) loaded the bases. Godoy then scored on a wild pitch before freshman second baseman Lindsey Marquez (Gahr HS) singled home Vaaulu. After freshman designated hitter Brandi Rummell (La Serna HS) was walked, freshman first baseman Ashley Ventura (Carson HS) drove in a run on a ground out. Freshman outfielder Devin Salmones (Gahr HS) then walked before sophomore third baseman Desiree Miera (Downey HS) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The final three runs came home on a three-run home run by Castrellon, her 12th of the season.

That was plenty of run support for freshman pitcher Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long Beach Poly HS), who allowed just one hit in the final four innings after allowing two in the bottom of the first inning. She picked up her 27th win (against five losses), while it was also her eighth shutout of the season and 24th complete game.

Castrellon finished the day going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, while Vaaulu (2-for-3), Marquez (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs, HR) and Salmones (2-for-2) all had two hits.
