JESSICA BARFIELD NAMED STATE'S APRIL FEMALE
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH |
Cerritos College
sophomore track and field star
Jessica Barfield (Lynwood HS)
was announced as the California Community College
Athletic Association (CCCAA) April Female Athlete of
the Month. Barfield, who becomes the seventh Falcon
athlete to earn the Female Athlete of the Month
Award, is also the fourth recipient in the last
eight months. Cerritos leads the state with the most
athletes to win the award.
Currently
competing in the Southern California Championships,
Barfield earned the award based on her
accomplishments in April. In saving her best for the
latter part of the season, Barfield scored 58 points
to help the Falcons win their fourth straight South
Coast Conference championship. Barfield, who helped
the team win the state title last season, won the
state championship in the long jump and placed
second in the triple jump. In the SCC Championships,
she won three individual events and one relay
championship, while also posting a second place,
third place and six place in other events. Barfield
showed her versatility by capturing the 100 meters
(12.32), long jump (18' 2"), triple jump (41' 6")
and ran a leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that won
with a time of 48.31. Her triple jump broke her own
school record. She also was a part of the
4x400-meter relay team that came in second place
(4:02.78), while finishing third in the 200 meters
at 25.89. Also during the month, Barfield won the
long jump at the Mt. San Antonio Relays and American
River Invitational, while finishing in the top five
in 11 other events during the month.
Barfield, who
faulted out of the long jump at the Southern
California Preliminaries, will be looking to advance
to the state championships in the 100 meters, 200
meters, triple jump and as a member of the 400-meter
relays and 1600-meter relays.
