On Friday at noon,
the Cerritos College softball team will begin
defense of their state championship when they play
Sierra College at the Salinas Sports Complex. The
Falcons (39-9-1), the #2 seeded team from the South,
will be facing the #3-seeded Wolverines (40-13), who
defeated host Fresno City College twice on Sunday to
advance to the state tournament. Cerritos is riding
a 12-game post-season winning streak, which includes
two-game sweeps over Ventura College at Saddleback
College in the Regional Playoffs. The Falcons have
also won their last 14 games this season.
This will be the
first-ever meeting against Sierra, who entered the
Northern California Regional Playoffs as the
#5-seeded team and the fourth place team out of the
Big 8 Conference. As for Cerritos, they won the
South Coast Conference championship and have been
the #2-seed throughout the playoffs.
A win by the
Falcons would send them to the 5:00 p.m. game on
Friday against the winner of the College of the
Siskiyous-Riverside College game. A loss would drop
them into the loser's bracket and they would play
the loser of the same game at noon on Saturday.
Cerritos has a 3-3
record against teams in the state tournament, while
the Wolverines are 3-5 against teams that made it to
the state tournament.
