On the strength of three individual state champions, the Cerritos College women's track and field team captured their second consecutive state championship, and third in the last four years, on Saturday at College of San Mateo. The Falcons, who edged Laney College, 107-101.5 in team points, also had a second place and six third place finishes. The team also scored the majority of their points in the field events, which provided the most depth of any school in the state.

Sophomore Erin Straughter (Valencia HS) picked up the team's long running state title, as she won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.37, while her time of 1:03.51 was good enough for fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Joining her in that race was sophomore Apryll White (Kennedy HS), who placed third in 1:03.16.

But it was the field events that won the title for the Falcons, as sophomore Jessica Barfield (Lynwood HS) captured the triple jump in 41' 3 3/4", with sophomore Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS) winning the pole vault at 12'. Points were scored in bunches in the hammer, javelin and shot put, as the Falcons saw three athletes compete in each event.

In the hammer, sophomore Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS) placed second at 157', while freshman Arianna Lugo (Los Altos HS) was right behind in third place with a toss of 152' 8". Ashley also scored points in the discus with a fourth place finish and she placed third in the shot put. Also placing in multiple events were freshman Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount HS) in the shot put (fourth place) and hammer (ninth place), while Guravska also came in third in the javelin at 133' 8 1/2". Freshman Cyntrail Pierce (Compton HS) was a third place finisher in the long jump (18' 1 1/2"), while her time of 12.19 was good for seventh in the 100 meters.
