CERRITOS FINISHES OFF BANNER YEAR |
During the
2007-08 athletic season, Cerritos College set
new records for most state championships (3) and
South Coast Conference championships (9) in the
history of the school in one season. Now that
the 2008-09 seasons have come to an end, it can
be said that this season is now the best ever.
The Falcons won four state championships
(women's water polo, men's soccer, women's
soccer, women's track and field), while 11 of
the college's 19 intercollegiate teams won
conference championships. The school is also in
contention for the Southern California Supremacy
Award, a title they won last year for the first
time, while they are looking to improve on their
second place finish in the state standings from
last year.
Below is a breakdown of the teams that won state titles,
conference titles and a few near-misses.
Women's Track and Field -
The Falcons not only won their second straight
state championship over the weekend, it was also
their third title in the last four years. The
team earned 107 team points to edge Laney
College (101.5 team points), while Cerritos had
three individual state champions. Sophomore
Jessica Barfield (Lynwood
HS) won the triple jump for the second
year in a row, while sophomore
Karen Guravska (El
Dorado HS) was the champion in the pole
vault and also finished third in the javelin and
tied for fifth in the high jump. Sophomore
Erin Straughter (Valencia
HS) won the championship in the
100-meter hurdles and turned in a fifth place
finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Along the way,
the Falcons on their third Southern California
in the last four years and fourth South Coast
Conference championship in a row.
Women's
Water Polo -
In winning their first South Coast
Conference championship in school
history, they parlayed that into
winning their first-ever state
championship. The Falcons, who
posted a 31-3 record, defeated
cross-town rival Long Beach City,
11-6 in the championship game. The
31 wins set a new school record,
which included a record 22-game
winning streak. Sophomore
Stephanie Rosero (Downey
HS) was named the Southern
California Player of the Year and
was an All-American selection for
the second year in a row. Also
earning All-American honors were
freshmen
Natalie Peng (Cerritos
HS) and
Yvonne Ruvalcaba (Montebello
HS), while freshmen
Adrianna Rodriguez
(El Rancho HS) and
Karen Aguirre (Downey
HS) were selected 2nd Team
All-Southern California. Head coach
Sergio Macias was
also named the conference's Coach of
the Year.
Men's Soccer - The Falcons
won their second state title in the
last three years and finished ranked
#2 in the country for the second
time in three years. The team
finished the season with a 22-4-1
record that was culminated when they
posted a 1-0 win over rival Mt. San
Antonio College in the state finals.
After finishing second in the South
Coast Conference the last two years,
the Falcons captured the conference
title this season. In contention for
National Coach of the Year, which he
won in 2008, head coach
Benny Artiaga was
named the Far West Coach of the Year
for the second time in three
seasons. National individual awards
included sophomore

Fe HS) being named 1st Team
All-American, while freshman

Beach Millikan HS) was a
2nd Team All-American selection.
Women's Soccer -
The Falcon women's soccer team
reached the pinnacle in 2008
after winning their second state
title in a row. Along with going
22-0-4 on the year, the team was
named National Champions, a
first for the program after they
were ranked #2 in the country
last season. The unbeaten season
was also a first for the
program, who won their fourth
South Coast Conference title in
a row. Sophomore
Corina Villegas
(Perris HS) also
became the first Cerritos player
ever to be named the National
Player of the Year and was an
All-American both of her seasons
with the team. Sophomore
Monique Cisneros
(Mayfair HS) was
a 2nd Team All-American
selection, while the two were
joined by

Men's Track & Field -
After snapping Mt. San
Antonio's 13-year South
Coast Conference
championship win streak by
winning their first-ever,
the Falcons went on to tie
for second in the state

off a rare first-second
place finish in the

the 4x100-meter relay team
of

(Long Beach Millikan
HS),

and

time of 40.20, which was the
second-fastest time in the
country this season.
Softball -
The Falcons won their second
straight South Coast Conference
title and advanced to the state
tournament for the third time in
as many seasons. The team was
looking to defend their state
championship, but suffered a
loss in their first game, which
dropped them into the loser's
bracket, forcing them to have to
win six games in two days to win
the title. Cerritos won the
first two games on the first
day, but were eliminated after a
loss in the third and finished
the season with a 41-11-1
record, marking the second year
in a row they won over 40 games.
Freshman catcher
Samantha Vaaulu
(Warren HS) was
named the National Catcher of
the Year after setting new
records in home runs (20), RBI
(71) and walks (32). Also named
to the All-American team were

before being eliminated. The team

Women's Swimming - With a
team comprised heavily of members from
the state championship water polo team,
the Falcon women' swimming team cruised
to the South Coast Conference

school history. The team saw 13 school
records broken along the way, as the
team came in 11th place at the state
championships. Of the 11 events in which
they competed at the state
championships, six ended up in new
school records, with freshman

HS) coming in second in the
state championships in the 100-yard

Serna HS) broke five individual
school records and was a part of all

while Peng also swam on all five relay
teams and set two individual records.
Women's Tennis - For the
third year in a row and fifth time in
the last six years, the Cerritos women's
tennis team won the South Coast
Conference title. Freshman singles
player

HS) came close to being the
first Falcon since 1986 to win the state
championship, but lost in the finals.
During the year, Nadres also reached the
finals of the conference tournament and
was a semi-finalist at the prestigious
Ojai Tournament.
And those who just missed out on winning conference
championships...
Baseball - With the lead
in the South Coast Conference race for
first place just three innings away, the
Falcon baseball team saw Long Beach City
come back to post a 4-3 win, which left
the team playing for second place. The

earn a tie for second place and were
then eliminated in the first round of
the Southern California Regional
Playoffs by Mt. San Jacinto College.
Freshman
Joe Terry (Long
Beach Poly HS) was named the
conference's Player of the Year, as the
team finished with a 27-17 record.
Football - With hopes of
returning to the state's elite, the
Cerritos football team came within one
yard of winning the division
championship and earning home field
advantage in the playoffs. But the
Falcons came up short on the last play
of the game against El Camino College,
but were selected to play in the Golden
Dome Bowl, where they dropped a 38-33
decision against Palomar College. The
team finished 7-4 on the year, with
sophomore
Johnny Tivao (Paramount
HS) and freshman

Nine players earned 1st Team
All-Conference honors, while seven have

schools, with three of them being to
PAC-10 schools.
Men's
Tennis -
Although they saw their four-year South
Coast Conference unbeaten streak come to an
end the Falcon men's tennis team finished in
a strong second place. Sophomore doubles
team
Doug Edwards (Western
HS) and
Jason Wall (Lakewood
HS) advanced to the semi-finals of
the state championship after playing for the
title the year before. The two also won the
title at the prestigious Ojai Tournament and
advanced to the finals of the Southern
California Championships.
Wrestling -
The Cerritos wrestling team may not have won the
South Coast Conference title, they did place
second in the conference and Southern California

the state championships. Sophomore
Mike Koehnlein (Marina
HS) won the state championship at 141
pounds, and was one of three to advance to the
finals, joining freshman 184-pounder

Chapel HS) and sophomore 285-pound

Glenn HS). In all, six Falcons earned
All-American honors for finishing in the top
four of their respective weight classifications.
Men's Water Polo -
After finishing in second place during South
Coast Conference play, the Falcon men's water
polo team came in third place in the SCC
Tournament and earned a berth in the playoffs.
The team was defeated in their first game of the
playoffs and were eliminated to finish the
season with a 23-8 record. Both sophomore

by a consistent group of runners, the Cerritos
men's cross country team placed third in the
South Coast Conference, fifth in the Southern
California Championships and placed 11th at the
state championships.
Men's Swimming - Although
they didn't win any at the South Coast
Conference Championships, the team did well
collectively, as they placed third. Freshmen

HS) and
Matt Mendoza (La Serna
HS) each finished in the top three of
three different races to lead the team.
Volleyball - With only one
sophomore on the team, the Falcon volleyball
team placed fifth in the South Coast Conference.
