05.18.09 - CERRITOS FINISHES OFF BANNER YEAR
During the 2007-08 athletic season, Cerritos College set new records for most state championships (3) and South Coast Conference championships (9) in the history of the school in one season. Now that the 2008-09 seasons have come to an end, it can be said that this season is now the best ever. The Falcons won four state championships (women's water polo, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's track and field), while 11 of the college's 19 intercollegiate teams won conference championships. The school is also in contention for the Southern California Supremacy Award, a title they won last year for the first time, while they are looking to improve on their second place finish in the state standings from last year.

Below is a breakdown of the teams that won state titles, conference titles and a few near-misses.

    Women's Track and Field -
The Falcons not only won their second straight state championship over the weekend, it was also their third title in the last four years. The team earned 107 team points to edge Laney College (101.5 team points), while Cerritos had three individual state champions. Sophomore Jessica Barfield (Lynwood HS) won the triple jump for the second year in a row, while sophomore Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS) was the champion in the pole vault and also finished third in the javelin and tied for fifth in the high jump. Along the way, the Falcons on their third Southern California in the last four years and fourth South Coast Conference championship in a row.

Women's Water Polo - In winning their first South Coast Conference championship in school history, they parlayed that into winning their first-ever state championship. The Falcons, who posted a 31-3 record, defeated cross-town rival Long Beach City, 11-6 in the championship game. The 31 wins set a new school record, which included a record 22-game winning streak. Sophomore Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS) was named the Southern California Player of the Year and was an All-American selection for the second year in a row. Also earning All-American honors were freshmen Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS) and Yvonne Ruvalcaba (Montebello HS), while freshmen Adrianna Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) and Karen Aguirre (Downey HS) were selected 2nd Team All-Southern California. Head coach Sergio Macias was also named the conference's Coach of the Year.

    Men's Soccer -
The Falcons won their second state title in the last three years and finished ranked #2 in the country for the second time in three years. The team finished the season with a 22-4-1 record that was culminated when they posted a 1-0 win over rival Mt. San Antonio College in the state finals. After finishing second in the South Coast Conference the last two years, the Falcons captured the conference title this season. In contention for National Coach of the Year, which he won in 2008, head coach Benny Artiaga was named the Far West Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. Along with going 22-0-4 on the year, the team was named National Champions, a first for the program after they were ranked #2 in the country last season. The unbeaten season was also a first for the program, who won their fourth South Coast Conference title in a row. With hopes of returning to the state's elite, the Cerritos football team came within one yard of winning the division championship and earning home field advantage in the playoffs. But the Falcons came up short on the last play of the game against El Camino College, but were selected to play in the Golden Dome Bowl, where they dropped a 38-33 decision against Palomar College.
