For the second
year in a row, Cerritos College has finished second
place in the California Community College Athletic
Association (CCCAA) National Alliance of Two-Year
College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup. The
Falcons, who won a school-record four state
championships during the 2008-09 school year,
finished with 168 points, which was a half-point
behind first place Mt. San Antonio College, who
finished with 168.5 points. Both teams are members
of the South Coast Conference and it marks the
second time in the six-year history of the NATYCAA
Cup that the top two teams are from the same
conference.
Each college can
use its best five women's sports and best five men's
sports toward totaling a college's point total.
Points are based on how each college's teams fared
in post-season competition, with 20 points going to
the team that wins the state championship. The
Falcons had four state champions this past season
(women's water polo, women's soccer, men's soccer
and women's track and field), while men's track and
field tied for second place, with softball and
wrestling coming in third place.
The half-point
difference is the closest of any race, with last
year's four-point difference being the previous
record. That year, Cerritos placed second to Fresno
City College. The second place finish in the state
also means the Falcons placed second in Southern
California, after winning their first championship
last year.
NATYCAA is the
professional organization of two-year college
athletic administrators and membership is open to
all two-year institutions from throughout the
country. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to
recognize and reward overall program excellence at
the two-year college level. The criteria for the
State Associations division were developed by the
CCCAA in conjunction with the California Community
College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA).
The 2008-09 winners will be recognized at the NATYCAA
Awards Luncheon, held during the 2009 NATYCAA
Convention, June 18-21 at the World Center Marriott
Resort in Orlando, Florida. Awards will be presented to
the top three colleges, and the top twenty schools in
the division will receive recognition. |
