11.15.09 - FOOTBALL SEEDED #3; HOSTS PALOMAR ON SATURDAY
    For the second time in as many years, the Cerritos College football team will be facing Palomar College in a post-season game. However, this year's game will be a first round Southern California Regional Playoff game, while last year the two met in the Golden Dome Bowl in Bakersfield. The Falcons (9-1), seeded #3 for the playoffs after defeating El Camino College, 42-28 on Saturday, will host the #6-seeded Comets (8-2) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in the National Bowl. The winner will face the victor of the #2 Fullerton-#7 Los Angeles Harbor winner next Saturday. This marks the first year the Falcons have advanced to the playoffs since the format began seven seasons ago. Tickets for the game are $8 for General Admission and $5 for students (with ID) and staff from the two colleges (with ID), senior citizens and children under 12 years old.
 
    Cerritos earned the right to get into the playoffs in their win over El Camino, which determined the second place team to come out of the National Division Central Conference. They won the game on the strength of three interception returns for touchdowns, while they added a punt return for touchdown. The played the game against the Warriors without two starters on offense, while two others were questionable prior to the start of the game.
 
    Offensively, the team is led by sophomore quarterback Chris Morales (La Habra HS), who has completed 137-of-268 passes for 2,210 yards and 25 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions. His favorite receivers have been sophomore wide receiver Michael Willie (Long Beach Wilson HS) with 39 catches for 760 yards and two scores, while sophomore wide receiver Joshua Robbins (La Mirada HS) has pulled in 32 passes for 502 yards and seven scores. Willie missed most of the game against El Camino, but the team also utilizes freshman tight end Lucas Mealey (St. John Bosco HS), who leads the team with eight touchdowns and has 28 receptions for 405 yards.
 
    On the ground, sophomore Tylik Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS) is lost for the season with an injury and still leads the team with 632 yards. Picking up the slack have been sophomore Demetrek Chambers (Long Beach Millikan HS), who has 322 yards and four scores, while freshman Jason Davis (La Habra HS) has added 273 yards. Freshman Ray Craig (Norwalk HS) will also see playing time.
 
    On defense, linebackers Cee Jay Harris (Long Beach Wilson HS), David Flores (St. Paul HS), David Lopez (Garfield HS) and Jack Francis (La Mirada HS) lead the way in tackles, while the team has posted 36 quarterback sacks and 78 tackles for loss. Versatile sophomore free safety Eric Russell (Gahr HS) has intercepted four passes and brought back two for touchdowns against the Warriors, while he is fourth on the team with 50 tackles. He also leads the team with 16 kick returns for a 32.4 average and is second with eight punt returns for a 26.2 average.
 
    As for the Comets, they rely on the quarterbacking duo of Nate Ong and Matt Christian, who have combined to throw for 2,385 yards and 18 interceptions. Martavious Lee leads the team with 44 receptions for 684 yards, while another pair of receivers have caught over 20 passes. Orenzo Davis paces a ground game with 833 yards and 10 scores, with Anthony Young leading the defense with four interceptions. On defense, 17 different players have recorded at least one quarterback sack, while Chris Boudreaux has 55 tackles to lead the way.
