11.17.09 - MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYOFFS ANNOUNCED
Both the Cerritos College men's and women's soccer teams won the state championship last season, while the women were crowned the National Champions and the men finished ranked second. On Saturday, both teams will begin defense of their respective titles at home. The Falcon men's team, which placed second in the South Coast Conference, was seeded #3 and will host #14-seeded Palomar College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for the women, who are the two-time defending state champions and winners of the South Coast Conference, they were seeded #8 and will play at 2:00 p.m. against #9-seeded San Diego Mesa College.

The Falcons (17-2-2) men's team will be facing Palomar (11-6-2) for the first time this season and are riding a four-match winning streak, with the last three being shutouts. The Comets were champions of the Pacific Coast Conference, but have only two wins against teams with winning records on the year with both of them coming against Southwestern College. As for Cerritos, they have seven wins against teams with winning records, including six that have advanced to the playoffs. The winner of the game will face the winner of the #6 Los Angeles Harbor College against #11 ECC Compton Center game and play on Tuesday.

On the women's side, Cerritos (19-2-0) was affected by a weak conference, which dropped their power ranking so low, even though they won the championship. As a result, they will host the Olympians (17-3-0), winners of the Pacific Coast Conference, which appears to be the best match-up of teams in the first round. San Diego Mesa has defeated one team that has made the playoffs this season, while the Falcons have wins over three teams that advanced to the post-season. The winner of the game will face the winner of the #1 Santiago Canyon College against #16 Santa Ana College game and play on Tuesday.
