MEN'S BASKETBALL SWEEPS ALL-CONFERENCE
AWARDS |
Cerritos College sophomore forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence
HS) was voted the South Coast Conference
South Division Player of the Year in men's
basketball, while first-year head coach
Russ May was named the Coach of the
Year. The Falcons, who won the division and will
open the Southern California Regional Playoffs
on Friday at Mt. San Antonio College, also had
four players earn 1st Team honors.
May, who was named the head coach not long
before the start of the season, has led the
Falcons to an 18-10 record and a #12 seeding in
the playoffs. A former Cerritos player and
assistant coach, May was unable to do any
recruiting and has worked with the players that
remained with the team when the school year
began. Jackson finished second on the team in
divisional scoring with a 12.6 average, while he
led the squad with a 9.7 average. On the year,
he averages 10.9 points and 8.1 rebounds a game
after finishing second in the Player of the Year
voting his freshman season.
Also named 1st Team were sophomore guards
Ken Brown (Soldan, MO
HS/Southwest Tennessee CC),
Jeremy Pope (Mayfair HS)
and
Wayne Chapman (Bellflower HS),
as well as freshman forward
Willie Edwards (Moreno Valley
HS). Brown leads the team in scoring (14.7)
and assists (4.2), while he pulls down 3.6
rebounds a game, while Pope is the third player
on the team to average in double-figures at
12.7, along with a 2.6 assist and 2.3 rebounding
average. In Chapman, the team receives 8.8
points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists a game,
while Edwards is scoring 9.1 points a game and
pulls down 4.9 rebounds per contest.
