04.30.11 - CERRITOS SWIMMERS BREAK RECORDS AT STATE
In his final race as a member of the Cerritos College men's swimming team, sophomore PJ Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) not only rewrote the school record book, he set a new state record. In the championship finals of the 200-yard breaststroke at the California Community College Athletic Association Men's Swimming Championships at East Los Angeles College, Gabayeron established a new state championship record with his time of 2:00.24. He broke the old state championship record time of 2:00.57, set by Justin Nicholas of College of Marin in 1988. Gabayeron, who won the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday, finishes his Falcon career with five individual state championships, the most ever in school history. Prior to Gabayeron winning his five state titles, Nikos Kostianis won four individual state titles from 2007-08.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Gabayeron finished fifth in the prelims with a time of 2:06.03, but blew out all of the competition with his amazing 2:00.24 time in the championships. His closest competitor, Brett Lowe of Diablo Valley College, came in second place in a time of 2:03.20. The time posted in this year's final broke his old school record of 2:01.96 that he set at the state championships his freshman year.

For his career, Gabayeron won five individual state championships, named All-American six times as an individual swimmer and three other times as part of a relay team, earned Swimmer of the Meet at the state championships his freshman year, set four individual school records and two relay records and won eight South Coast Conference championships.

On the women's side, sophomore swimmer Mehgan Carbajal (El Rancho HS) had been in search of breaking the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke all year long. On Saturday, in her final attempt to break the record, she did just that at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships at East Los Angeles College. In the prelims, Carbajal posted a record time of 1:09.28, eclipsing the old mark of 1:09.97 set by Ashley Badali in a 2007 conference meet.

The time was the second fastest in the prelims, with Carbajal recording a time of 1:09.32 in the championships finals to finish in fourth place at the state championships. On Friday, Carbajal finished in 17th place in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Jessie Ku (Cerritos HS) also concluded her Falcon career on Saturday by coming in 15th place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.64. After coming in 16th place during the prelims, she was the final swimmer to qualify to swim in the consolation championships. Her 15th place finish is also accompanied by a ninth place finish in the 50-yard backstroke and an 11th place finish in the 100-yard IM.
