MEN'S SOCCER HAS 11 SIGN SCHOLARSHIPS |

Over the last six years, the
Cerritos College men's soccer team
has been one of the state leaders
both on the field and in sending
their players to the four-year
level. Since 2004, the Falcons have
played in three state championship
games (winning two), while they have
been nationally ranked each year. In
addition, they have sent 39 players
to four-year schools. That number
can be changed to 50, with the
announcement that 11 players from
the 2010 team will be moving on to
the four-year level.
Heading that list is
Cesar Castillo ( Eagle
Valley, CO HS), who has signed
with Division I power UC Santa
Barbara. The Gauchos finished 14-5-3
last year, while they capped their
2010 season with its ninth
consecutive appearance in the NCAA
Division I Men's Soccer Championship
and captured their first Big West
Conference Tournament title. With
the Falcons, Castillo was a two-time
1st Team All-South Coast Conference
selection, while he posted 19 goals
and 15 assists in his two seasons.
"Cesar Castillo is one of the better players that we have
recruited to UCSB," Gauchos head
coach Tim Vom Steeg said. "He is a
two-way midfielder who can assist,
score and cover the field
defensively. He will compliment an
already accomplished group of
midfielders returning next year."
"I'm always very proud when I see our players do well and are
recruited by four-year schools,"
said head coach
Benny Artiaga. "That's what
the community college level is here
for. We're here to help prepare them
in the classroom and on the field so
they are ready to make an impact
with four-year schools. I think our
success on and off the field shows
with the amount of players we have
seen move on shows that the coaching
staff is doing their job. The 11
we're sending on is the most we've
ever moved on. Plus, the three
unsigned sophomore we still have are
weighing their options, so the
number will get higher. I am so very
proud of each and every one of
them."
