BASEBALL SEEDED #8 FOR PLAYOFFS |
After
missing the Southern California Regional Playoffs
last season, the Cerritos College baseball team will
be hosting the first round of the playoffs when they
begin on Friday. The Falcons (21-14), who won the
South Coast Conference for the first time since
2008, are seeded #8 for the playoffs and will host
#9-seeded Cuesta College in a best-of-three series.
The first game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday,
with the second game slated for 11:00 a.m. on
Saturday. A third game will be played, if necessary.
Cerritos will be facing the Cougars (22-14) for the first
time this season, although the Falcons played a game
at Cuesta College during the Allan Hancock
Tournament over Spring Break. Cerritos enters the
post-season winning 10 of their final 12 games,
including victories over Santa Ana, Fresno City and
Merced. Cuesta also owns a win over Fresno City.
The Falcons are led by sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez

Glenn HS),
who's batting .364 with two home runs and 21 RBI,
while sophomore third baseman/pitcher
Christian Rodriguez
(Norwalk
HS)
is hitting .340 at the plate and has a 6-2 pitching
record with a 4.70 ERA. Sophomore first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun
(John
Glenn HS)
is hitting .338 with a team-high 25 RBI, with
freshman outfielder
Bubby Rossman
(La
Habra HS)
hitting at a .324 clip with three home runs.
Sophomores
Nick Quezada

Kevin Hendrix

HS)
are 8-4 and 4-3, respectively on the mound, with
freshman
Cesar Chavez
(Mayfair
HS)
leading the team with four saves.
As for Cuesta, Michael Camporeale leads the team in batting
average (.384), doubles (14), triples (4), RBI (39),
stolen bases (13) and shares the team lead in home
runs at six with Max Duval. On the mound, Phillip
Gerber is 9-3 with a 2.67 ERA and four complete
games, while John Tidemann is 8-2 with a 2.53 ERA
and 63 strikeouts in 67/2 innings.
