05.01.11 - BASEBALL SEEDED #8 FOR PLAYOFFS
After missing the Southern California Regional Playoffs last season, the Cerritos College baseball team will be hosting the first round of the playoffs when they begin on Friday. The Falcons (21-14), who won the South Coast Conference for the first time since 2008, are seeded #8 for the playoffs and will host #9-seeded Cuesta College in a best-of-three series. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, with the second game slated for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. A third game will be played, if necessary.

Cerritos will be facing the Cougars (22-14) for the first time this season, although the Falcons played a game at Cuesta College during the Allan Hancock Tournament over Spring Break. Cerritos enters the post-season winning 10 of their final 12 games, including victories over Santa Ana, Fresno City and Merced. Cuesta also owns a win over Fresno City.

The Falcons are led by sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez (John Glenn HS), who's batting .364 with two home runs and 21 RBI, while sophomore third baseman/pitcher Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) is hitting .340 at the plate and has a 6-2 pitching record with a 4.70 ERA. Sophomore first baseman Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn HS) is hitting .338 with a team-high 25 RBI, with freshman outfielder Bubby Rossman (La Habra HS) hitting at a .324 clip with three home runs. Sophomores Nick Quezada (Mayfair HS) and Kevin Hendrix (Mayfair HS) are 8-4 and 4-3, respectively on the mound, with freshman Cesar Chavez (Mayfair HS) leading the team with four saves.

As for Cuesta, Michael Camporeale leads the team in batting average (.384), doubles (14), triples (4), RBI (39), stolen bases (13) and shares the team lead in home runs at six with Max Duval. On the mound, Phillip Gerber is 9-3 with a 2.67 ERA and four complete games, while John Tidemann is 8-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 67/2 innings.
