CERRITOS BASEBALL SENT TO SANTA ANA FOR
SUPER REGIONAL |
After dispatching Cuesta College in two games during
their Southern California Regional Playoff First
Round series, the Cerritos College baseball team
will now travel to Santa Ana College for the Super
Regional. The Super Regional is a four-team,
double-elimination tournament, with the winner
advancing to the State Championships. With several
upsets during the first round - most notably
#2-seeded Chaffey College being eliminated - several
teams moved up in the ranking, with the #3-seeded
Dons taking over hosting duties. The second game of
the tournament will pit Cerritos (23-14) against
Santa Ana on Friday at 4:00 p.m., with #3-seeded
Orange Coast College facing #6-seeded Santa Barbara
City College playing at 12:00 p.m. in the early
game. The California Community College Athletic
Association stipulates that game times the first day
are to be played at noon and 4:00 p.m. on the first
day, but the times could be adjusted if all coaches
agree to change them.
The Falcons faced the Dons on April 22 and came away with a
5-4 non-conference victory at Kincaid Field.
Cerritos has not faced Orange Coast or Santa Barbara
City this season.
Santa Ana (26-13) reached the Super Regional by defeating San
Diego Mesa College in three games, with the deciding
game being a 7-1 victory. As for Orange Coast
(30-8), they swept past Allan Hancock College in two
games, while Santa Barbara City (24-15)
defeated Riverside Community College twice
on Saturday to advance.
Cerritos has not faced Orange Coast since the 2006 season
when they were defeated, 4-3 in the Southern
California Regional Play-in Game, and defeated the
Pirates in the playoffs, 15-14 in 1999. The last
time the Falcons have played the Vaqueros, it
was during the Wally Kincaid Era in 1973 and the
team posted a 4-1 win. The first baseman for the
Falcons on that team was current head coach
Ken Gaylord.
