11.15.11 - TOP SEED AWARDED TO WOMEN'S SOCCER FOR PLAYOFFS
Although they saw their shot at a perfect season end with a 1-0 non-conference loss to San Bernardino Valley College in their final game of the regular, the Cerritos College women's soccer team was seeded #1 for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Falcons (20-1-0), who won their sixth straight South Coast Conference championship, will be hosting #16-seeded Orange Coast College (12-4-4) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the first round. Cerritos won back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008, while they earned their first National Championship in 2008. At the start of the post-season, the Falcons are currently ranked #1 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for Division III (non-scholarship) schools.

Cerritos has not faced Orange Coast since a 4-1 victory back in 2007. The Pirates finished in third place in the Orange Empire Conference. The winner of this game will play the winner of the #8-seeded San Diego Mesa (12-3-5) game against #9-seeded San Diego Miramar (16-0-2), which will also be played on Saturday. The second round game is schedule for Tuesday, November 22. The Falcons have not faced either potential opponent this season.

Orange Coast is led by Emma Pridmore, who has scored 13 goals on the season, while Jessica Amaral has posted nine goals and nine assists on the year. Nicole Vanderlaan leads the team with 10 assists, with goalkeeper Katie O'Brien handling all of the goalkeeping duties in the year and recorded an 0.57 goals against average with 11 shutouts.

As for Cerritos, they are paced by freshman Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS), who leads the team in goals (21), assists (16) and points (58), with seven other players scoring at least four goals. Freshman Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) has scored nine goals with eight assists, while freshman Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS) has posted six goals and nine assists. Freshman Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS) has scored five goals with 10 assists, while sophomore Jennifer Vega (Norwalk HS) is third on the team with eight goals. Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat HS) leads the team with a 13-1-0 record with an 0.23 goals against average and 12 shutouts, while sophomore Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS) is 7-0-0 with an 0.68 goals against average and eight shutouts. The duo have shared four shutouts on the year.
