Cerritos College sophomore first baseman
Josh Ancona
(Bellflower HS) and sophomore relief pitcher
Cesar
Chavez (Mayfair HS) were both
recognized for their accomplishments during the
season by being named to the All-South Coast
Conference baseball teams. Ancona, who led the
Falcons with a .336 batting average, along with 13
RBI and 14 walks was named to the 1st Team, while
Chavez came on in relief in team-leading 18 times
and posted a 1-1 record with three saves for the
7-29 Falcons. Chavez, who was named honorable

ERA, while striking out 15 batters...[more]
04.27.12 - Season comes to an end
with 5-3 loss
Trailing 5-3 in
the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cerritos College
baseball team was looking to snap their worst losing
streak in school history. They were able to load the
bases with one out, but freshman outfielder
Sebastian Frutos
(Bellflower HS) was picked off first base
before sophomore second baseman
Chris
Hefner (El Dorado HS) popped
up to the shortstop to drop a 5-3 South Coast
Conference decision to Mt. San Antonio at Kincaid
Field on Friday. The loss ends the season for the
Falcons (7-29, 4-17), who dropped their final 13
games of the year, while the Mounties (28-8, 17-4)
won the conference championship...[more]
04.26.12 - Cerritos shut out by
Mt. San Antonio
Aside from a leadoff single from sophomore second
baseman
Chris Hefner (El Dorado HS), the
Cerritos College baseball team was unable to collect
any more hits in their 8-0 South Coast Conference
loss at Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday evening.
Mounties pitcher Ken Kissell (5-0) tossed a
one-hitter, allowed one walk and hit two batters to
hand the Falcons their 12th consecutive loss. The
season closes out for Cerritos (7-28, 4-16) at 2:30

04.24.12 - Runs continue to elude
Falcons
Suffering through
their worst season in school history, the Cerritos
College baseball team continues to struggle for run
support, as they dropped their 11th straight game, a
5-2 South Coast Conference decision against Mt. San
Antonio College at Kincaid Field on Tuesday. The
Falcons (7-27, 4-15) have scored two or fewer runs
in nine of their last 10 games and will get another
chance to snap their losing skid against the first
place Mounties (26-8, 15-4) at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday

push across the game-winning run in the bottom of
the ninth inning for a 3-2 setback, their 10th in a
row. The Falcons (7-26, 4-14) will close out their

04.19.12 - Cerritos drops ninth
straight game
For the ninth game
in a row, the Cerritos College baseball team failed
to come up with a win, as they dropped a 7-2 South
Coast Conference decision to East Los Angeles
College on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons (7-25,
4-13), who close out their three-game series with
the Huskies (17-15, 11-6) on Saturday at noon at Cal
State Los Angeles, have scored two or less runs in
seven of those nine losses, including their last
five outings. It also was the 17th time this year
the team has scored two or fewer runs in a game,
which have all been losses.
Against East LA, the Falcons trailed 3-0 heading
into the bottom of the third inning and pushed a
single run across the board against starting pitcher
Juan Vera (5-3). In that stanza, freshman outfielder
Zach Mello
(La Mirada HS) led off with a walk, moved
to second base on a single by sophomore second
baseman
Chris
Hefner (El Dorado HS), with
both runners advancing on a sacrifice bunt by
freshman shortstop
Cesar
Castillo (Bellflower HS).
Sophomore first baseman
Josh Ancona (Bellflower HS/El
Camino College) then drove home Mello with a
sacrifice fly. Cerritos would not get their next hit
until the eighth inning when sophomore outfielder
Chris Esparza (Santa Fe HS)
led off with a single...[more]
04.14.12 - Falcons strand runners

It's not as if the
Cerritos College baseball team didn't have their
fair chances at scoring in their South Coast
Conference game against Los Angeles Harbor College
on Saturday afternoon at Kincaid Field. The Falcons,
who dropped a 3-1 decision, left seven runners on
base, with five of those being in scoring position,
as well as leaving the bases loaded in the sixth
inning. The loss was the seventh in a row for
Cerritos (7-23, 4-11), who have just six games

inaugural class
Before
an overflow crowd of more than 380 in attendance,
seven people became the first inductees into the

04.10.12 - Defensive miscues cost
Cerritos game
Cerritos College
sophomore pitcher
Kyle Harper
(La Mirada HS/Fullerton College) cruised
through the first four innings in his starting role
against Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday in a
South Coast Conference game at Kincaid Field.
However, a pair of fielding errors, including one by
Harper, allowed the Seahawks to score a pair of
runs, while another error in the sixth inning
accounted for two more runs, as LA Harbor (10-18,
4-9) recorded a 4-2 win. The loss was the fifth in a
row for the Falcons (7-21, 4-9), with the two teams
meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Wilmington.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
fourth inning after freshman designated hitter
Andres Dorates (La Mirada HS)
drew a two-out walk against Chad Kim (4-0). A single
by freshman outfielder
Daniel Renteria (Bellflower HS)
kept the inning alive when his base hit through the

Zach
Johnson (Kennedy HS) followed
with a single to right field, which plated Dorantes...[more]

hoped for, as the Falcons were defeated in all three
of their games. They opened with a 15-2 loss at the
hands of Fresno City College, before the host
Bulldogs posted a 9-1 win. The trip ended with
Cerritos (7-20) dropping a 6-4 game against College

Lancers held on to defeat Cerritos College, 9-8
on Saturday at Brookside Park's Jackie Robinson
Memorial Field in a South Coast Conference baseball
game. The loss snapped a modest two-game winning
streak for the Falcons (7-17, 4-8), while PCC (5-18,

03.29.12 - Falcons string
together second victory
For the first time
this season, the Cerritos College baseball team has
strung together a pair of wins in a row, as they

team's record to 7-16 overall and 4-7 in SCC play.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series
at noon on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Field in
Pasadena. After that game, Cerritos will play three
road games in the Allan Hancock Tournament.
Although they spotted Pasadena City an early run,
the Falcons were able to score a pair of their own

heading into the fifth inning, Cerritos saw the
Lancers get to within 6-5, while the teams traded

03.22.12 - Pitching leads Falcons
to win
It took going
through the lineup a little more than one time, but
once freshman starting pitcher
Christian
Price (Cerritos HS) found his
rhythm, he pitched strong enough to help lead the
Cerritos College baseball team to a 3-2 South Coast
Conference win over El Camino College at Kincaid
Field on Thursday. The win is the second in three
games for the Falcons (5-15, 2-6), who close out the
three-game set against the Warriors (14-7, 3-5) at
noon on Saturday at El Camino.
For Price (1-1), he struggled with his location
through the first 11 batters, allowing two hits,
three walks and a hit batter. Despite the location
issues, he limited the Warriors to just one run and
relied on his defense to come up with plays when
called upon. After loading the bases with two outs
in the second inning, he got Peter Ives to tap the
first pitch back to the mound to end the threat. The
lone run came as a result of a lead-off hit by
Ronnie Galosic,
two walks and a pair of fielder's choices to score
the run...[more]
03.20.12 - Cerritos gets shut out

proposed new signage for Kincaid Field, as well as

03.13.12 - Losses continue to
mount for Cerritos
Through the first
six innings against ECC Compton Center on Tuesday in
a South Coast Conference game at Kincaid Field,
Cerritos College left-handed starting pitcher
Jake
Bell (Burroughs HS) was
cruising along, allowing just three hits and
recording five strikeouts. However, in the top of
the seventh inning, the Tartars posted four runs,
with the big blow being a three-run home run from
Oscar Leon, and the Falcons dropped their fourth
straight SCC game, 7-3 to fall to 3-13 overall and
0-4. The two teams will meet at 2:30 p.m. on
Thursday in the second of their three-game set.
Cerritos took a 2-0 lead through the first five
innings before Compton (9-7, 2-2) started their
comeback. In the bottom of the fourth inning,
sophomore outfielder
Evan
Sanchez (St. Paul HS) led off
with a walk and advanced to second base on a
sacrifice bunt from freshman catcher
Sergio Barboza (Bellflower HS).
Sanchez eventually scored when Tartars starting
pitcher Nick Sanchez was called for a pair of balks.
With one out in the fifth inning, sophomore third
baseman
Zach
Johnson (Kennedy HS) drew a
walk and moved to second base on a single from
sophomore first baseman
Josh Ancona (Bellflower HS/El

03.10.12 - Team gets swept away

This is the first season that the South Coast
Conference has gone to a three-game series and for
the Cerritos College baseball team, they're probably

College pitching the remainder of the season. On
Saturday, the Vikings completed a three-game sweep

03.08.12 - Cerritos continues to

in their second of a three-game series against Long
Beach City College, the Falcons turned to freshman
Gael Esparza (Santa Fe HS) in
their South Coast Conference game at Kincaid

runs in 4 1/3 innings, as the Vikings posted a 3-1

sophomore starting pitcher Steven Gallardo, who
struck out 11 batters, as the Vikings pounded out 12

02.28.12 - Solid pitching effort
for naught in 2-1 loss
For
the second straight game, Cerritos College sophomore
left-handed starting pitcher
Jake Bell
(Burroughs HS) has thrown very well,
especially on Wednesday against Glendale College in
a non-conference game. He earned the win against Los
Angeles Valley College last week, but saw his
complete-game effort against the Vaqueros result in
a loss, as the Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision. Bell
(1-4) surrendered just four hits on the day, one of
them being a solo home run to Edgar Montes in the
bottom of their fourth inning, which turned out to
be the game-winning run, as Cerritos stranded seven
runners on base. The Falcons (3-9) will now start
South Coast Conference play next Tuesday at 2:00
p.m. when they travel to Long Beach City College.
The conference has moved to a three-game series,
which means the two teams will play their three-game

02.23.12 - Cerritos provides run
support in 11-6 win
It took 19 days,
but the Cerritos College baseball team was able to
secure their third win of the season after they
defeated Los Angeles Valley College, 11-6 in a
non-conference game at Kincaid Field on Thursday.
The last time the Falcons (3-8) won a game was back
on February 4 when they defeated the same Monarchs
(4-5) team, 11-10, after falling behind 10-0 three
innings into the game. The win also snapped a
seven-game losing streak. Cerritos will now travel
to Glendale College next Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in
their final non-conference game before starting
defense of their South Coast Conference title.
One of the keys to the win was the hitting of the
8-9-1 batters in the lineup, as they went a combined
10-for-17 and scored four of the team's runs. Every
batter in the lineup had at least one hit, as the
Falcons clubbed a season-high 18 hits on the day.

02.21.12 - Seventh loss in a row

In 2011, the
Cerritos College baseball team suffered through a
five-game losing streak, while in 2008, it was a
six-game losing streak early in the season that
started the team off slowly. But on both occasions,
the Falcons were able to turn things around and win
the South Coast Conference championship. On Tuesday,
Cerritos dropped their seventh in a row, a 10-4
non-conference decision to Glendale College to fall
to 2-8 on the season. The team will host Los Angeles
Valley College on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Kincaid

Freshman pitcher
Christian

they added another run in the third inning...[more]
12.17.12 - Golden West throttles
Falcons, 12-3
In the last six
games, the Cerritos College baseball team has
struggled to find their offense, and each time the
result was a loss. On Friday, the Falcons saw their
season record drop to 2-7 after a 12-3
non-conference setback against Golden West College
at Kincaid Field. In those six straight losses,
Cerritos has scored just 15 runs. They will look to
try and turn the corner on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when
they host Glendale College in another non-conference
game.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Kyle
Harper (La Mirada HS/Rio Hondo
College) was peppered for five hits in the
first two innings, but was able to keep the Rustlers
(5-4) off the board. However, in the third inning, a
leadoff single by Daniel DeWolf was followed by a
run-scoring double from Chase Harrison, while Blake
Cooper drove in the second run of the inning. By the
fifth inning, Harper (0-3) was still struggling and
was pulled after allowing a walk and RBI base hit to
Harrison (5-for-5, three RBI, three runs). But the
most devastating blow of the game was a grand slam

South Coast Conference championship and advance to
the Southern California Super Regional. After their
9-1 non-conference loss at Santa Ana College on
Thursday, Cerritos dropped to 2-6 on the year, which
includes losses in five straight games. They will
look to snap that streak on Friday when they host
Golden West College at 2:00 p.m. at Kincaid Field.

02.04.12 - Cerritos splits
doubleheader
After their first
game of a double-header against Los Angeles Valley
College, where the Cerritos College baseball
team stranded 13 runners on base and dropped a 2-1
decision, they felt that if they could generate as
many base runners in their second game, they would
change the tide of the outcome. But for the Falcons,
they found themselves trailing 10-0 after the first
three innings against the Monarchs. But Cerritos
slowly worked their way back into the game and
turned five walks, five hit batters and two LA
Valley errors into 11 runs to come away with an
11-10 non-conference win. The Falcons (2-1) have now
played three one-run games to start the season and
will travel to Golden West College in a 2:00 p.m.
non-conference game on Tuesday.
In the second game, where sophomore starting pitcher
Jon Villapando (Norwalk HS)

that led to five runs, he was pulled after
surrendering a lead-off single in the second inning.
Sophomore Anthony Nunes (Gahr
HS) didn't fare much better, allowing four runs
in two innings of work. It wasn't until freshman
Jared Gibson (Downey HS)

Kincaid Field on Friday afternoon. The Falcons, who
trailed, 8-3, scored the final six runs of the game
in the latter three innings, with only two of the
runs being earned. Cerritos (1-0) will now face Los
Angeles Valley College tomorrow in a doubleheader at
10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Kincaid Field.
The Falcons had runners at second and third base
with one out after sophomore third baseman Josh Ancona
(Bellflower HS/El Camino College) reached
on an error and sophomore catcher Chase
Holland (La Mirada HS/Fullerton College)
bunted for a hit that Owls (0-1) pitcher Juan Cabral
dove at, but couldn't catch. A sacrifice bunt by
freshman first baseman Daniel Renteria
(Bellflower HS) set the table for
freshman designated hitter Joe Aguirre
(Kennedy HS). He hit a 2-2 offering from
Cabral (0-1) to Citrus third baseman Mike Rowland,
whose throw was well over the head of first baseman
Ricky Mount. The ball rolled into the Falcon
bullpen, and before right fielder Andrew Chico
could retrieve the ball, pinch-runners Cesar
Castillo (Bellflower HS) and
Andres Dorantes (La Mirada HS)
had raced around the bases for both runs to win the
game. The throwing error to end the game was the
sixth on the day by the Owls...[more]
06.15.11 - Dave Serrano named
head coach at Tennessee
Former
Cerritos College baseball player, assistant coach
and head coach Dave Serrano has
been named the head coach at the University of
Tennessee, and will be introduced to the school on
Thursday. Serrano, who played for the Falcons
(1984-85), also served as an assistant coach
(1988-90, 92-94) and head coach (1991), has spent
the last four years as the head coach at Cal State
Fullerton.
"After an overwhelming 24 hours of events, I have
made the decision to leave a great program at Cal
State Fullerton to take on the challenge of
returning the University of Tennessee to a spot
among the nation's elite," Serrano said on the
University of Tennessee website. "While this
decision was not an easy one, it makes it a little
easier to say yes when you have an entire family
completely in support for you. We hope to be proud
and active members of the Knoxville community and
will work hard to give Volunteer fans a baseball
team that they can cheer on for years to come.".
Back in 1995-96, Serrano was hired as an assistant
coach for the Volunteers after working on the Falcon
staff for seven seasons. In his first season with
Tennessee, he was part of a team that advanced to
the College World Series and featured MLB players
Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey. In his two years with
the Vols, the team posted a 97-36 record.
But Serrano's life-long goal was to coach at Cal
State Fullerton and was brought in after the 1996
season to coach with longtime friend George
Horton, another former Cerritos player and
head coach. Serrano was an assistant under Horton
from 1997-2004 until he was hired as the head coach
at UC Irvine. He led the Anteaters to the College
World Series in 2007 before being named the head
coach at Cal State Fullerton. Serrano, who owns a
lifetime coaching record of 289-139-1, is a veteran
of seven College World Series and is one of just 11
coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha...[more]

 Former
Cerritos College baseball player Brian Gaylord,
who just completed his senior year at Lewis & Clark
(ID) State College, has signed a free agent contract
with the Kansas City Royals, while another former
Falcon, Joe Terry, was drafted in the 30th
Round by the Cincinnati Reds. Gaylord, the son of
Cerritos head coach Ken Gaylord, will report
to instructional camp, while Terry will decide
whether or not he will return to Cal State Fullerton
for his senior year.
Gaylord, who led the Warriors with 12 home runs
and 60 RBI, batted .279 on the year as the
team's starting first baseman. On the year,
Lewis & Clark posted a 38-17 record and advanced
to the NAIA College World Series. In his junior
season, Gaylord finished fourth on the team with
a .357 batting average with eight home runs and
38 RBI, while the team played in the NAIA
College World Series. With the Falcons, Gaylord
was a 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference
selection as a sophomore after he batted .325.
