Knowing they had to win a pair of
games on Saturday, the Cerritos College baseball
team set out for a long day. After posting an 8-7
win over #7-seeded Mt. San Jacinto College in the
morning to even their series, the 11th-seeded
Falcons (27-17) opened up a 10-3 lead in the
tie-breaker. However, the Eagles (33-11) scored

with the Eagle bats
The talk prior to the first round

that the Cerritos College baseball team would be
facing a pair or pitchers from Mt. San Jacinto
College that put up very impressive numbers on the
year. The Falcons, seeded #11, were facing the
#7-seeded Eagles in a best-of-three series starting
on Friday afternoon. After taking an early 1-0 lead,
Cerritos saw Mt. San Jacinto open up a 9-1 lead
after five innings. But the sixth, Falcons were able
to plate five runners against starting pitcher BJ
Salsbury, who came into the game with a 13-1 record
and a 1.93 ERA. Although they got as close as 9-6,
Cerritos could not shut down the bats of Mt. San

conference Player of the Year
After turning in one of the most
amazing hitting seasons in recent memory, Cerritos
College second baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) was named the South
Coast Conference Player of the Year. Terry, who will
be named to the All-State team as a designated
hitter, batted .417 with a school-record 10 triples,
stole 8-of-9 bases and also led the team in RBI

group of four players to be named to the first team,
as the Falcons finished the SCC in second place and
will find out who they will face in the first round
of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on
Sunday.
Joining Terry on the 1st Team were
sophomore pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS), freshman
pitcher

05.01.09 - Cerritos locks down
second place with win
Knowing a win over Los Angeles
City College would secure a second place conference
finish and automatic berth into the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College
baseball team removed all doubt by turning a 4-1
lead into a 9-1 advantage before settling for a 10-5
win over the Cubs at Griffith Park on Friday
afternoon. The win improves the Falcons record to
16-8 in the South Coast Conference and 26-15
overall. Going into the final day of the regular
season, there was a three-way tie for second place
with Cerritos, El Camino College at Mt. San Antonio.
The conference bylaws state that in the event of a
three-way tie, the first criteria to break the tie
is each team's cumulative record against the other
two teams they are tied with. For the Falcons, they
went 4-2 against the Warriors and the Mounties,
while El Camino was 3-3 and Mt. San Antonio was 2-4.
So with the win, Cerritos locked down second place
and will find out on Sunday afternoon where they are
seeded in the 18-team regional playoffs. teams
seeded 15-18 will compete in a one-game play-in game
on Tuesday, while the remaining teams will open

04.30.09 - Falcons take care of
business against LA City

season with wins in their final two South Coast

last place Los Angeles City College, 11-5 on
Thursday at Kincaid Field. The Falcons, who entered
the day tied for third place with Mt. San Antonio
College, are now 15-8 in the SCC and 25-15 on the
year. They finish up their regular season on Friday
with a 2:30 p.m. game against the same Cubs team at
Griffith Park. The selection of who advances to the

The Falcons strung together runs in
five of the first seven innings to take an 11-0 lead
over LA City before the Cubs scored the final five
runs of the game. Cerritos started their scoring in
the first inning in record-breaking fashion. After
freshman outfielder
Jake Mayoral (Rocklin HS) led
off with a base hit and stole second base, freshman
second baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) hit his school-record
14th triple to score Mayoral. Terry broke the
24-year-old record of 13 triples set by Ron Ewart

04.28.09 - Chance at conference
title gets away
With a shot at moving into at
least a tie for first place in the South Coast
Conference, the Cerritos College baseball team
dropped a 4-3 game against Long Beach City at
Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win,
the Vikings earn at least a share of the conference
championship, while the Falcons are still fighting
for their playoff lives. Cerritos closes out the
season on Thursday and Friday with a home-and-home
series against eighth place Los Angeles City, while
Long Beach City ends their regular season at 26-16
overall and 17-7 in the SCC. The Falcons (24-15,

Thursday, came into the game tied with El Camino
College (14-7), while fourth place Mt. San Antonio
College was right behind at 13-8.
Cerritos took a
2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when
freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
singled and came home on a triple by freshman second
baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS). The three-base hit by
Terry tied the school's single-season record of 13

04.25.09 - Win moves team closer
to title
Heading into their crucial South
Coast Conference game at Long Beach City College,
the Cerritos College baseball team wasn't sure if
their week-long bye was going to effect their hot
bats. Well, after getting two runs on four hits in
the top of the first inning, it was apparent that
the Falcons were still in overdrive. Cerritos went
on to post a 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Joe
Hicks Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon over the
Vikings to move one step closer to winning the
conference title. With the win, Cerritos is now 14-7
in SCC play, while LBCC dropped to 16-7. Entering
the day, Cerritos, Mt. San Antonio and El Camino all

first base and two outs in the top of the first
inning, freshman second baseman
Joe Terry

04.19.09 - Cerritos rips Oxnard,
20-8
Not since the 1990 season has a
Cerritos College baseball team scored in
double-figures in six games in a row. The 2009
version of the Falcons accomplished that feat on
Sunday when they pounded out 24 hits in a 20-8
non-conference win over Oxnard College at Kincaid
Field. The win was also the fourth in a row for
Cerritos, which is also their longest of the season,
as they improved to 23-14 on the year, while the
Condors dropped to 11-23. After a pair of byes in
South Coast Conference action, the Falcons will play
their most important game to date, as they travel to
face first place Long Beach City College on Saturday
at noon. Cerritos (13-7) is currently a game behind
the Vikings (14-6), while both teams have four games
remaining.
In putting
together their lofty numbers against Oxnard,
freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) tied a
school record with six hits, while he reached base
all seven times he batted. He joins Jacob
Ferris (2004) and Keith Lugo
(1977) as the only Falcons to ever get six hits in a
game. Along with the accomplishment of Mayoral,
freshman third baseman
Steve
Hernandez (Downey HS) went
4-for-6 with six RBI, which is one shy of tying the
single-game school record for most runs driven in
for one game. Hernandez, who entered the game with
only 20 at-bats on the season, had a two-run double
in the first inning, a two-run single in the fourth
and RBI base hits in the fifth and sixth innings...[more]

eighth inning. The victory improves the Falcons

03.12.09 - Cerritos scores big
win over LB City
Usually when a team allows 10
runs in an inning, it's almost assumed that the team
has gotten beat pretty bad. That wasn't the case for
the Cerritos College baseball in Thursday's South
Coast Conference game against Long Beach City
College at Kincaid Field. As it turned out, both
teams had 10-run innings, with the Falcons
prevailing, 18-16 in which the two teams scored the
second most combined runs in a game on Cerritos
history. The record of 36 runs was scored in a 26-10
win over Glendale in 1958 and in a 25-11 Cerritos
win over College of the Canyons in 1989. The Falcons
(11-8 overall, 4-3 SCC) will now travel to Griffith
Park to face Los Angeles City College in an SCC game

the ball skipped all the way to the wall and Reynoso

15-7 victory

College baseball team was about to suffer their
second loss in a row, as they trailed visiting Rio
Hondo College, 7-2 after five innings. The pitching
had already surrendered six hits, two hit batters,
two errors and a walk. But as soon as the Falcon
batters started receiving free passes from the

By the end of the game, Cerritos had scored 13
unanswered runs and recorded a 15-7 win, in a game
the team had received 14 walks and slapped out just
nine hits, while nine of the walks turned into runs.
The Falcons (2-1) will now host College of the
Canyons at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Freshman pitcher
Skye Severns (Claremont HS)
showed that he had good stuff, but the Rio Hondo
batters were waiting for their pitches and scored
two unearned runs in the second and added five more
runs (two unearned) by the time he was taken out
after four innings. Unlike the day before when the
bullpen struggled to keep the team in the game, the
duo of freshmen Efren Gutierrez (Gahr
HS) and Chris Villalobos (El
Rancho HS) allowed just five hits over the
final five innings and completely shut down Rio
Hondo. Villalobos, who went the final 2 2/3 innings,

01.30.09 - Sloppy pitching
results in 12-6 loss
Throughout a long baseball
season, there are occasions when the pitching fails
and the team relies on the offense to win the game.

their bats going early on and led Glendale College,
6-2 through the first three innings of a
non-conference game at Kincaid Field on Friday
afternoon. However, the pitching just wasn't able to
hold up and nine walks, along with six hit batters
led to a 12-6 loss that was ended after seven
innings due to darkness. The Falcons (1-1) will now
host Rio Hondo College at noon on Saturday.
In taking that lead, Cerritos scored
twice in the second inning and four more in the
third. Sophomore designated hitter
George Sanchez (Gahr HS)
drilled a one-out double deep into the left-center
field gap and eventually came home on a throwing
error by Vaquero shortstop Danny Casey. On the play,
freshman catcher David Neff (John
Glenn HS) reached first base on an infield hit.
But Casey tried to catch Neff taking a big turn and
threw the ball away, which allowed Sanchez to score.

Beach Wilson HS) eventually drove in Neff with
a two-out base hit...[more]
