06.11.06 - College World Series To Have Falcon Connections
The College Baseball World Series may be the stage for Division I programs, but it still has a Cerritos College feel to it. Cal State Fullerton head coach George Horton, who is leading his team to the College World Series in Omaha this weekend, is a former Falcon player and head coach. The Titans, ranked #5 nationally, defeated the University of Missouri twice this past weekend to advance to the World Series and will face the University of North Carolina on Friday. Back in 2004, Horton led Cal State Fullerton to the National Championship and is now in his 10th year at the helm of the Titans. Two Cerritos College baseball players were selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft, which was held over the last two days. Sophomore pitcher/catcher Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS) was taken by the New York Mets in the 44th Round, and it marks the third year in a row he was selected in the draft. A trio of players off the Cerritos College baseball team, who finished in a tie for second place in the South Coast Conference and ended the year 27-17, have signed letters of intent with four-year universities. At the annual coaches meeting at the end of the season, the coaches from the South Coast Conference selected their All-Conference teams and the Cerritos Falcons had two players earn 1st Team honors, while three others were selected 2nd Team and Honorable Mention. 05.09.06 - Season Comes To An End For Falcons After 4-3 Loss
For the Cerritos College baseball team, one-run games are no stranger to the team. This season alone, the Falcons have been involved in 16 of them, including their Southern California Playoff Play-in game at Orange Coast College on Tuesday. But, just like three of their last four setbacks, the Falcons came out on the short end of another one-run contest, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Pirates and were 8-8 on the year in one-run contests. Cerritos (27-17), seeded 17th out of the 18 teams, fought back from a 4-0 deficit to get to within a run against Orange Coast, and had the bases loaded in two of the final three innings but did not score. The Cerritos College baseball team was selected to compete in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, but they found out they will have their work cut out for them, as they were put in a play-in round situation. Despite their 7-0 loss to Mt. San Antonio College on Friday afternoon to close out the regular season, the Cerritos College baseball team appears to be headed for the Southern California Regional Playoffs for the first time sine the 2003 campaign. The Falcons tied for second place in the conference with Los Angeles Harbor College, after they dropped a 16-3 decision to East Los Angeles College in their finale. Sophomore second baseman Dan Luyben (Lakewood HS) tripled home freshman Jose Serrano (Artesia HS) with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Cerritos College baseball team to a 7-6 South Coast Conference win over Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday. The win, coupled with a 5-4 Los Angeles Harbor College win over East Los Angeles College, keeps the Falcons in a second place tie with the Seahawks with just one regular season game remaining. With a chance to secure at least a share of second place in the South Coast Conference, the Cerritos College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Los Angeles Harbor College at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the two teams are tied for second place at 15-7, while Mt. San Antonio College is now 14-8 after their 11-0 loss to El Camino College. The Falcons will now travel to Mt. For the second time in three days, the Cerritos College baseball team struggled to score runs against Long Beach City College pitching. Over the last two seasons, the Cerritos College baseball team has had a hard time figuring out cross-town rival Long Beach City College. Through the first two and a half weeks of the season, the Cerritos College baseball team has shown that they can pitch, play defense and hit. Trouble is, they have had been unable to put it all together on a consistent basis. Leading 5-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Falcons watched the Comets win the game on a three-run home run off the bat of Tyler Perkins.
