For the second time in
three days, the Cerritos College baseball team
struggled to score runs against Long Beach City
College pitching. The Falcons, who were shut out 8-0
on Thursday, managed just one run against the
Vikings Tommy Peale, in a 3-1 South Coast Conference
loss on Saturday at Joe Hicks Field to fall two
games behind front-running LBCC in the standings.
Cerritos is now 19-11 overall and 10-4 in the
conference, while Long Beach City improved to 24-7
overall and 12-2 in the SCC. The Falcons, who hadn’t
lost two games in a row since February 3-4, will now
travel to Los Angeles City College on Tuesday for a
2:00 p.m. contest.
Overshadowed by the
pitching performance of Peale (9-0) was the pitching
performance of Falcon freshman
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS), who went all
eight innings and allowed just four hits. It was a
three-run sixth inning that did in Camacho (6-3), as
three of the four hits, along with an error, came in
that stanza.
Cerritos took a 1-0 lead
in the top of the sixth inning, as sophomore right
fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) singled with
two outs. After another base hit by sophomore
catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS),
sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben’s
(Lakewood HS) base hit to right field allowed
Van Doren to score, as his slide beat the throw from
the outfield.
But, in the bottom of the
inning, LBCC’s Mike Harris led off with a single and
moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After a
single by Daniel Prieto put runners at first and
third base, Peale and Mike Coladonato each slapped
out hits to score runs. The third run of the inning
came on a fly ball to Van Doren in right field off
the bat of Jovanny Bramasco. Van Doren, who read
that the ball was going over his head, appeared to
make an over the shoulder catch, but the ball
bounced out, which allowed a run to score.
Aside from the inning
where they scored their lone run, the Falcons had a
runner reach second base only twice in the game. In
the second inning, freshman designated hitter
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) doubled with
two outs, while sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS), who had two
hits on the day, singled in the third inning and
moved to second on a passed ball. |
