Sophomore left-handed
pitcher
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS) pitched eight
innings and struck out 11 Los Angeles City College
hitters to help lead the Cerritos College baseball
team to an 8-1 South Coast Conference win at Kincaid
Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the
Falcons are now 20-11 overall and 11-4 in the SCC,
while the Cubs dropped to 3-17 overall and 1-11 in
the conference. Cerritos will now host El Camino
College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
McGregor, who picked up
his seventh win of the season, baffled the Cubs
hitters all day with off-speed pitches, as five of
the strikeouts were called looking. He did see a hit
batter lead to the lone LA City run in the top of
the second inning, which tied the game at 1-1. The
11 strikeouts were a career-high for McGregor, while
freshman
David
Gurbach (Aliso Niguel HS) pitched a
perfect ninth inning.
Offensively, the Falcons
broke the 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the
third inning and then added four more in the fourth.
They closed out the scoring with a single run in the
seventh inning. In the third, sophomore second
baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) singled with two outs and moved
to second base on a wild pitch. He came home on a
single from sophomore center fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS). After a
stolen base by Van Doren, he was driven home on a
base hit by sophomore shortstop Scott Patynik
(Whittier HS).
Cerritos took advantage
of two hit batters and a walk in the fourth inning,
which helped lead to their four runs. Freshman
designated hitter
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) led off the
inning by being hit by a pitch, while sophomore
first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) followed by
drawing a walk. After a single by freshman left
fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) loaded the
bases, freshman right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO HS) was hit by a pitch to force
in a run. Freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) followed with a
two-run single, while a Montgomery RBI double in the
seventh inning closed out the scoring.
On the day, sophomore
catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
collected three hits and drove in a run, while
Patynik and Baslow each had two hits. |
