The Cerritos College
baseball team scored four runs in the top of the
ninth to avoid a devastating loss on Wednesday
afternoon, as they defeated Los Angeles City College
11-8 in a South Coast Conference game. Entering the
contest, the Falcons were looking to hold onto
second place, while the Cubs were 3-20 on the season
and 1-14 in SCC play. With the win, Cerritos is now
13-5 in the conference with six games to go, while
they are 24-13 overall. The team has a double bye
and will return to conference action next Tuesday
when they play host to East Los Angeles College at
2:30 p.m. at Kincaid Field.
After falling behind the
Cubs, 4-1 after two innings, the Falcons found
themselves trailing 8-7 heading into the top of the
ninth inning. But freshman right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO HS) led off the inning with a
walk and was advanced to second base by freshman
third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS). Sophomore
second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) drove in Moore with a base hit
to tie the game at 8-8 and LA City changed pitchers.
Sophomore outfielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) kept the
rally alive with a base hit until freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) gave the team
a 9-8 lead with a single, while sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) followed with a
single to load the bases. Up stepped clutch-hitting
first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS), who
drilled a 1-2 pitch for a base hit, which scored the
final two runs of the inning.
In the bottom of the
ninth inning, freshman pitcher
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS) closed out the
game to earn the win with the final two outs coming
on a double play. Camacho came on in the fifth
inning in favor of freshman
Robbie
Dominguez (El Rancho HS), who allowed
seven runs (five earned), while three of the four
batters he walked came in to score. Dominguez
punched out six batters, while Camacho struck out
five and allowed just five hits to pick up his
eighth win of the season.
Montgomery led the 17-hit
day for the Falcons by going 4-for-6 with three RBI,
while six other players had two hits, including
sophomore designated hitter
Ryan
Bateman (Santa Fe HS), who saw his
first action at the plate since March 9. Van Doren
(three runs, RBI), Rodriguez (run, RBI), Patynik
(run), More (two runs, RBI) and freshman outfielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) all had two
hits. |
