Freshman starting pitcher
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS) scattered seven
hits and absorbed five walks in his 6 2/3 innings of
work, while the offense provided enough runs to help
lead the Cerritos College baseball team to a 4-1
South Coast Conference win against East Los Angeles
College at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon. With
the victory, the Falcons remain in second place with
a 14-5 conference mark and are 25-13 overall, while
the Huskies dropped to 10-11 in the conference and
19-21-1 overall. The two teams square off again on
Thursday at East LA for a 2:30 p.m. start.
Currently, Cerritos is
holding on to second place in the conference with
five regular season games remaining. The entered the
game on Tuesday three games behind Long Beach City
College (two in the loss column), with the Vikings
at Compton College. Long Beach City (17-3) has just
three games left after their game on Tuesday.
Cerritos scored single
runs in the first and second inning, which held up
until the Huskies finally got to Camacho in the top
of the seventh inning. In the first four innings,
East Los Angeles had runners in scoring position,
but Camacho was able to work out of the jam, thanks
in part to two inning-ending double plays. In the
seventh inning, however, a two-out infield single on
a close play at the bag preceded a double by Jaime
Ballasteros over the head of Falcon right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO HS), which chased Camacho. In
stepped freshman
Robbie
Dominguez (El Rancho HS), who issued
a wild pitch before he was helped out on a stellar
play by sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS). Husking batter
Eric Stephens hit a ball that appeared to go into
center field, but Patynik dove for the ball and his
throw to first base was short-hopped and scooped up
by sophomore
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS).
The Falcons picked up two
insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
After sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) led off with a base hit,
sophomore outfielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) squared to
bunt in an attempt to move Luyben to second base.
But, on the first pitch, he pulled the bat back and
singled to left field, putting runners at first and
second. Freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS), who singled
in the team’s first run, followed with a hard shot
up the middle that deflected off the glove of
Huskies pitcher Mark Muro and into center field for
an RBI hit with Van Doren moving to third base.
Patynik then grounded into a fielder’s choice, which
scored Van Doren from third base.
In the ninth inning,
sophomore closer
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
allowed a lead-off base hit, but the fourth
double-play of the game ended that rally and he
picked up his fourth save of the season. Rodriguez
and Luyben each had three hits on the day, while
Moore drove in the team’s second run with a double
in the second inning. |
