Los Angeles Harbor College
shortstop Corey Camarillo hit a solo home run in the
bottom of the ninth inning off Cerritos College
sophomore pitcher
Brad
Schwarzenbach (St.
John Bosco HS) to give the Seahawks a
6-5 South Coast Conference win on Saturday
afternoon. Entering the game, LA Harbor trailed the
second place Falcons by two games, but with the win,
they are now 14-7 in the SCC and 23-18 overall. With
the loss, Cerritos drops to 15-6 in the conference
and 26-14 on the season.
The two teams meet up again on
Tuesday at Kincaid Field at 2:30 p.m. in a crucial
game. With only three regular season games left,
there is a logjam for second place in the
conference, as Mt. San Antonio College also entered
the day two games behind the Falcons. Cerritos
closes out the regular season with two games against
the Mounties.
After spotting the Seahawks a 4-0
advantage, Cerritos slowly worked their way back
into the game, as they scored a single run in the
fourth inning, two more in the sixth inning, one in
the seventh inning and tied the game in the eighth
inning. Several controversial plays peppered the
game, one of which accounted for the fifth LA Harbor
run.
After the Falcons cut their
deficit to 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, the
Seahawks had a runners at first and second with one
out. Then, when a ground ball was hit to Cerritos
sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier
HS), it looked like the Falcons would
get out of the inning on a double play. Patynik
threw to Falcon second basebal
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS)
for the force out but was unable to make a throw to
first base because the runner, Steve Carrillo, went
in very late with a slide. While the play was still
going, the runner at second base, pinch-runner
Marcus Cogman, headed for home and the play at the
plate was very close, with the umpire calling the
runner safe.
Freshman right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO
HS) slammed a solo home run in the top
of the seventh inning to make the score 5-4, while
in the eighth, Luybed led off with a walk and then
moved to second base on a balk. After a single by
sophomore center fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La
Mirada HS) put runners at first and
third, a two-out single by freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth
HS) tied the game. The third out of the
inning came on a botched stolen base attempt. With
runners at first and third, Baslow took off for
second base on a delayed steal in an attempt to get
into a rundown, but was tagged out before Van Doren
could make a break for home.
On the mound, freshman
Robbie
Dominguez (El
Rancho HS) lasted 5 1/3 innings and
allowed five runs (four earned) and nine hits, but
only allowed three hits in the finals 3 2/3 innings.
Schwarzenbach pitched a strong game and only allowed
the fastball by Camarillo to be hit hard. At the
plate, Luyben led the team with two hits and scored
twice, while Van Doren reached base twice. |
