Sophomore left-handed
pitcher
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) became the
first pitcher in school history since 1989 to throw
a complete game one-hitter, and first since the 2000
season, as the Falcons recorded a 3-0 non-conference
win over Ventura College on Thursday. The win evened
the team’s record at 2-2 and they will now face
Sacramento City College on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in
their third of three games played at Palomar
College.
The game was scoreless
until the bottom of the eighth inning until
sophomore outfielder
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) led off
with a walk and moved to third base on a double by
freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS). Freshman left
fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) drove in what
turned out to be the winning run with a base hit
before Van Doren helped out his own cause with an
RBI ground out. The final run of the inning came in
an error off the bat of sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS).
After retiring the first
11 batters he faced, Van Doren allowed a two-out
base hit and then set down 15 of the next 16 batters
to close out the win. He allowed a lead-off walk to
start the ninth inning, but ended the game on a
double play. As a result, he faced just one batter
over the minimum.
The last time the Falcons
recorded a one-hitter, it was in 2000, as Joe
Bunton, Shane Ellison, Trevor
Wilkinson and Alex Coleman combined to
defeat Compton College. It was Jason Kerr who
was the last pitcher to throw a complete-game
one-hitter, as he defeated San Diego Mesa College. |
