What a difference a day
can make. On Friday, the Cerritos College baseball
team slapped out 14 hits and scored 12 runs in their
win over Victor Valley College. On Saturday, the
Falcons were limited to just five hits and one run
in a 5-1 non-conference loss to Los Angeles Valley
College. With the setback, the team is now 3-5 on
the season and will host a doubleheader tomorrow. At
10:00 a.m., Cerritos will face Los Angeles Harbor
College and then host Golden West College at 2:00
p.m.
The Monarchs opened the
game with two runs in the top of the first inning
off Falcon starter
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS) on three hits.
After a quick second inning LA Valley picked up two
more runs in the top of the third inning, which
included an error that kept the inning alive. It was
a 5-0 game in the fourth inning, but that was when
Camacho settled down and retired the final 11
batters he faced before coming out after seven
innings. Freshman left-hander
Lalo
Ceniceros (El Rancho HS) came on and
retired six of the seven batters he faced.
Cerritos went hitless in
the third through the sixth inning until a one-out
double by sophomore designated hitter
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS).
In the eighth inning, the Falcons threatened to get
back into the game, but left the bases loaded after
scoring their lone run. With one out, sophomore
shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) reached on an
error before freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) was hit by a
pitch. After the second out was recorded, sophomore
center fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) drove in the
team’s only run with a base hit. Freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) was then hit
by a pitch to load the bases before Schwarzenbach
sent a deep fly into dead center field that was run
down for the final out.
On the day, Schwarzenbach
went 2-for-4 at the plate, as did Van Doren. |
