Through the first two and
a half weeks of the season, the Cerritos College
baseball team has shown that they can pitch, play
defense and hit. Trouble is, they have had been
unable to put it all together on a consistent basis.
In two games on Sunday, the Falcons limited Los
Angeles Harbor College to just six hits and posted a
6-1 win in eight innings in the morning game of the
Casey Stengel Tournament at Kincaid Field. But, in
the afternoon game, Cerritos allowed 10 runs,
committed six errors and collected just four hits in
a 10-1 loss to Golden West College.
The Falcons are now 4-6
on the season and will face the Rustlers again on
Wednesday at Golden West College in a non-conference
game.
Against LA Harbor,
sophomore left-handed pitcher
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) recorded his
second consecutive quality start, as he limited the
Seahawks to six hits in seven innings of work. He
was in trouble in only one inning, but an error led
to the only run by LA Harbor. In collecting his
second win, Van Doren struck out two, walked three
and hit two batters before freshman right-hander
David
Gurbach (Aliso Niguel HS) came on and
pitched the final inning.
Offensively, the Falcons
scored three runs in the top of the third inning
with freshman first baseman
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) leading off by
getting hit by a pitch. After sophomore catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
doubled to put runners at second and third, freshman
right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade (CO) HS) singled in the first run
of the game. After a strikeout and a hit by pitch,
freshman center fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina
HS) singled in Schwarzenbach before a sacrifice
fly by freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) drove in the
third run.
Van Doren helped out his
cause in the fourth inning with an RBI single, while
sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) drove in the
final two runs with a base hit in the fifth and on a
fielder’s choice in the seventh inning.
In the loss to Golden
West, the Falcons trailed just 2-1 after three
innings after Patynik drove in Armstrong on a ground
out. But Cerritos collected just two more hits the
remainder of the game, while the Rustlers registered
10 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of six errors,
which accounted for four runs.
Schwarzenbach made his
first career start and lasted five innings, as he
gave up four runs (two earned) and three hits and
struck out four. The final four innings were pitched
by four Falcon pitchers, and the Rustlers scored six
more times. |
