Freshman center fielder
Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) went
2-for-3, including a bases loaded triple, to help
lead the Cerritos College baseball team to a 14-5
non-conference win at Golden West College on
Wednesday afternoon. The victory avenged a 10-1 loss
to the Rustlers three days earlier and improved the
Falcons record to 5-6 on the season, while Golden
West fell to 8-4. On Saturday, the team will travel
to Fullerton College for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
The Falcons spotted
sophomore starter
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS) a 5-0 lead
after the first inning, while Armstrong’s three-run
triple came on an 0-2 count with two outs in the top
of the fifth inning after the Rustlers cut the
Cerritos lead to 5-2. Sophomore catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
led off the fifth inning with a single before two
outs were recorded. Sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) and sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS), who clubbed a
two-run single in the first inning, each walked.
That set the table for Armstrong, who also singled,
was hit by a pitch and sacrificed on the day and is
now batting .357 on the season.
McGregor, who won his
third straight start this year, pitched into the
seventh inning and allowed five runs (two earned) on
seven hits and struck out three batters. He was
victimized by an error in the fourth inning and two
more in the seventh inning, before he was removed in
favor or freshman
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS). In his 2 1/3
innings, Camacho did not allow a hit and struck out
two batters.
Cerritos picked up two
more runs in the sixth and four big runs in the
ninth inning. The Falcons also made the most of four
Rustler errors, which accounted for half of their
runs. In the ninth inning, Luyben and Armstrong were
both hit by pitches before freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) reached base
on an error. Freshman third baseman Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS) and sophomore right fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) had
consecutive two-run singles to close out the
scoring.
On the day, Cerritos
collected 14 hits, with Patynik going 3-for-3 with a
walk and two runs driven in, while Serrano (three
runs, two RBI), Van Doren (two runs, two RBI) and
Armstrong all had two hits. Luyben scored three
runs, while sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) also had
two hits and two RBI. |
