The Cerritos College
baseball team ran their winning streak to five games
after sophomore pitchers
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
and
Phil Van Doren (La Mirada HS) limited
Mt. San Jacinto College to just four hits in a 15-0
non-conference road win on Friday. The Falcons, 9-6
on the year, set season-high marks in runs (15) and
hits (14) in the win, while sophomore second baseman
Dan
Luyben (Lakewood HS) hit the team’s
first home run of the season. The Falcons will look
to extend their winning streak on Saturday, as they
host Fullerton College at 12:00 p.m. A week ago,
Cerritos recorded a 4-3 victory over the Hornets.
It was a close 3-0 game
heading into the top of the sixth inning, until the
Falcons put three on the board in the sixth, five in
the seventh, along with one more in the eighth and
closed out the game with three runs in the ninth.
Schwarzenbach, who had struggled on the mound so far
this season, limited the Eagles to three hits in 7
1/3 innings of work, while striking out eight. Van
Doren, one of the team’s regular starters, recorded
the final five outs, including a strikeout to end
the game.
Luyben opened up the
scoring in the top of the second inning with a home
run, while two Mt. San Jacinto errors in the third
inning accounted for both Falcon runs. In the sixth,
sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) led off
with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice
bunt by sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS). After freshman
center fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS)
was hit by a pitch, freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) drove in a run
with a base hit. Another error kept the inning alive
before Van Doren drove in a run with a single.
The bats continued to
stay hot as the game progressed, and several
substitutes got into the action. Sophomore
Ryan
Bateman (Santa Fe HS), who had yet to
collect his first hit of the year, drove in a run in
the top of the ninth inning with a single, while
sophomore back-up catcher
Tomoya
Mizutani (Ogaki Minami, Japan HS)
collected his first collegiate hit with an RBI
single in the top of the ninth inning.
Seven of the nine
starters collected at least one hit, while nine
different players drove in at least one run. Van
Doren, who started the game in right field, went
4-for-6 with two RBI, while freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) was only 1-for-7
at the plate, but drove in two runs. Montgomery
scored three times and had two doubles, a walk and
was hit by a pitch, with Luyben going 2-for-5 with
two runs scored and a walk. |
