After jumping out to a
5-0 lead through five innings, it appeared as though
the Cerritos College baseball team would be on their
way to their sixth straight victory. But, Fullerton
College rebounded by tying the game and eventually
posting an 8-7 non-conference win Saturday afternoon
at Kincaid Field after scoring two runs in the top
of the ninth inning. With the loss, the Falcons fall
to 9-7 on the season, while the Hornets improve to
5-8-1. Next up for Cerritos will be the start of
South Coast Conference action, as Cerritos plays
host to Compton College on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Fullerton started their
comeback in the top of the sixth inning, scoring
four runs on only two hits, as they took advantage
of two walks and two hit batters by freshman starter
Robbie Dominguez (El Rancho HS) and
freshman reliever
Lalo
Ceniceros (El Rancho HS). With the
score tied at 5-5 after six innings, Cerritos scored
two runs after an error by Hornet third baseman Matt
Votaw put runners at first and second with no outs.
Sophomore designated hitter
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
then reached base on an infield bunt single, which
set up a two-run double by freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS).
But that would be all the
offense the Falcons could put together, as Fullerton
tied the game with single runs in the seventh and
eighth innings before scoring their game-winning
runs in the ninth inning off Cerritos sophomore
pitcher
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS). In the
ninth, Terry Goddard walked with one out, before a
single by Matt Smith preceded an RBI base hit by
Matt Silverdale. The second run came on a sacrifice
fly off the bat of James Myers.
On the day, Falcon
sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) was hit by
three pitches, while freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS),sophomore
right fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) and freshman center
fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) all
had three hits. |
