Sophomore right-handed
pitcher Sheldon McGregor (La Mirada HS)
pitched six solid innings, while freshman
right-hander Rob Dominguez (El Rancho HS)
went the final three innings to lead the Cerritos
College baseball team to a 5-1 non-conference
victory in their season opener Saturday afternoon at
Kincaid Field. The Falcons (1-0) will now host Santa
Ana College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
After spotting the Eagles
a 1-0 lead, Cerritos scored four runs in the bottom
of the fifth inning and picked up an insurance run
in the seventh inning. Sophomore shortstop Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) led off with a base
hit in the fifth inning and stole second base. After
a walk to freshman third baseman Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS), freshman left fielder Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) doubled in the
tying run. Sophomore center fielder Phil Van
Doren (La Mirada HS) followed with a
run-scoring single before Baslow came home on a
balk. The final run of the inning was on a sacrifice
fly by freshman catcher Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS).
All the while, McGregor
was limiting the Eagles to their lone run on five
hits in six innings of work. After striking out five
batters of the first 10 batters he faced (struck out
six on the day), McGregor allowed two base hits and
a walk to account for the run. After the base hit,
he set down 10 of the final 12 batters to earn the
first win of the season. Dominguez had just two
balls leave the infield in earning the save, and
struck out three batters.
Cerritos was aggressive
on the base paths, stealing six bases in seven
attempts, with Serrano swiping two in the three
times he reached base. Baslow went 2-for-4 with an
RBI and two runs scored, with five other Falcons
collecting one hit. |
