Santa Ana College scored
two unearned runs in the top of the 10th
inning to record a 3-1 non-conference win over
Cerritos College in a game played at Kincaid Field
on Sunday afternoon. Trailing 1-0 through the first
seven innings, the Dons (1-1) scored the tying run
in the top of the eighth inning and then took
advantage of two Falcon (1-1) errors to account for
their two runs in the 10th inning.
With one out, Dons
pinch-hitter Jason Jordan hit a ground ball to
sophomore Falcon shortstop Scott Patynik (Whittier
HS), whose throw to first baseman Ryan
Bateman (Santa Fe HS) was in the dirt.
After a base hit by Santa Ana left fielder Andy
Navarrette put runners at first and third base,
Cerritos pitcher Brad Schwarzenbach (St.
John Bosco HS) attempted a pick-off throw at
first base, which went wild, allowing Jordan to
score. After a pop-up, right fielder Nick Mahin
singled home the second run of the inning.
The Falcons had a chance
to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th
inning, but Santa Ana closer Kris Medlen struck out
the final two batters with runners on second and
third base to end the game. After Schwarzenbach led
off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, he moved
to second base with one out after Patynik singled.
Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball, but
freshman left fielder Andrew Baslow (Chatsworth
HS) and freshman third baseman Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS) each struck out to end the
inning.
In the bottom of the
first inning, Baslow led off with a single and moved
to second base after Serrano was hit by a pitch.
Sophomore right fielder Ryan Montgomery (La
Mirada HS) moved the runners over with a
sacrifice bunt before freshman catcher Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) drove in the
team’s lone run on a ground out.
Freshman pitcher Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS) pitched seven
excellent innings for the Falcons, allowing just
four singles and struck out one. Only one batter
reach second base against Camacho, who was rewarded
with three double plays, along with some fine
defensive plays by Serrano at third base. Santa Ana
starter Daniel Manos went six innings and allowed
one run on three hits while striking out three. Matt
Dufour pitched 1 2/3 innings before Medlen came on
to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings.
On the day, Cerritos
center fielder Phil Van Doren (La Mirada
HS) went 2-for-4, while Schwarzenbach singled
and was hit by a pitch in his two plate appearances.
For the Dons, Navarrette went 2-for-4 with a hit by
pitch and scored a run, while Mahin was 2-for-5 with
an RBI.
The Falcons will now
travel to Palomar College, where they will play on
Wednesday (vs. Palomar), Thursday (vs. Ventura) and
Friday (vs. Sacramento City). The team will then
play at San Diego Mesa College on Saturday. |
