Sophomore first baseman
Ryan Montgomery (La Mirada HS)
clubbed a third-inning grand slam, while sophomore
left-handed pitcher
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) pitched
seven innings, as the Cerritos College baseball team
opened South Coast Conference play with a 9-1 home
victory over Compton College on Wednesday. With the
victory, the Falcons are now 10-7 on the season and
1-0 in the SCC, while the Tartars fell to 9-11 and
0-1. The team will now travel to Pasadena City
College tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. game.
The grand slam by Montgomery was the
41st in school history and first since Bryan
Kepner's in 2003 against Pasadena City College.
With Cerritos leading
2-0, freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) reached base on
a fielder’s choice, as did sophomore second baseman
Dan
Luyben (Lakewood HS). Serrano was
able to beat the throw to second base on a ground
ball by Luyben, which put runners at first and
second with one out. After a fly ball out, freshman
right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO HS) was hit by a pitch. That
brought up Montgomery, who drilled the first pitch
by Compton’s Esau Aceves over the left field wall
for his first home run of the season. The four RBI’s
in the game also doubled his season total.
As for Van Doren, he
struggled at times with his control, walking one and
hitting another, while he allowed eight hits and one
run. He earned his third win of the season and
worked out of a jam in the third inning, while the
Tartars had runners on first and second in the fifth
after they scored their lone run before he recorded
the final out on a come-backer. Sophomore
Don
Bodewig (Brea Olinda HS) pitched the
final two innings.
Cerritos scored single
runs in the first and second inning, while they took
advantage of a Compton error in the fourth to score
once and registered their final two runs in the
fifth inning, with one coming thanks to a balk.
Sophomore catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
singled home the game’s first run, while sophomore
shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) picked up his
first of two RBI’s on the day with a sacrifice fly
in the second inning, scoring Moore, who opened the
inning with a double.
In the fifth inning,
Moore, who had three hits on the day, singled with
one out. After Montgomery drew a walk, the two
pulled off a double-steal before Patynik singled in
Moore and Montgomery came home on the balk.
On the day, Moore was
3-for-3 with three runs scored and was hit by a
pitch, while Schwarzenbach went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman center fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina
HS) also had two hits, while Montgomery was
1-for-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. Jorge
Becerra led the Tartars with three hits. |
