The Cerritos College
baseball team fought back from a 5-2 deficit against
El Camino College on Thursday afternoon and scored
four runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out
a 6-5 South Coast Conference victory. With the win,
the Falcons are now 13-8 on the year and 4-1 in
conference play. They will now travel to East Los
Angeles College on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m.
conference game.
Sophomore
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS), who was the
team’s starting pitcher and stayed in the game as
the designated hitter after he was replaced on the
mound, led off the ninth inning with a base hit.
Freshman center fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina
HS) followed with a walk before the first out of
the inning was recorded. Freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) singled to load
the bases, while sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) drove in the first run of the
inning on a ground out. Freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) then singled
home two more runs before sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) singled in
pinch-runner
Tomoya
Mizutani (Ogaki Minami, Japan HS) on
an 0-2 pitch.
Freshman pitcher
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS), who came on in
relief of Van Doren in the sixth inning, pitched the
final 3 1/3 innings to record the victory. After
allowing a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt,
another infield ground out moved the runner to third
base. Camacho ended the game on a called third
strike.
Luyben went 2-for-5 on
the day with two RBI, while Montgomery also
collected two RBI, as he recorded a sacrifice fly in
the sixth inning, while scored Rodriguez, who
reached base on a single and had three hits on the
day. |
