Sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) drove in
sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) with a
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to
give the Cerritos College baseball team a 5-4 South
Coast Conference win over Los Angeles Harbor College
at Kincaid Field on Thursday afternoon. With the
win, the Falcons are now 15-8 overall and 6-1 in the
SCC, while the Seahawks drop to 14-9 overall and 5-2
in the conference. Cerritos will now host Mt. San
Antonio College on Saturday at noon.
Montgomery tripled to the
right center field wall with one out which set up
the fly ball to right field by Patynik off losing
pitcher Mario Navarez. The Falcons trailed 4-2 in
the third inning before working their way back into
the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh
before scoring the winning run in the eighth.
Freshman pitcher
Robbie
Dominguez (Santa Fe HS) did a superb
job in relief of sophomore
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS), who allowed
all four runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Dominguez went the final 6 2/3 innings also allowed
just one hit, while striking out six, including
pinch-hitter Sal Ferrara for the final out of the
game.
Dominguez worked out of a
jam in the eighth inning when Raul Landeros led off
with a single. Brent Dean followed with a high
chopper to freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS), whose throw to
Montgomery was late. However, pinch-runner Marcus
Cogman tried to advance to third base on the play
and was cut down when sophomore catcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
alertly covered third base and Montgomery’s throw
cut down Cogman. Dean then tried to steal second
base, but was thrown out by Schwarzenbach.
Cerritos tied the game at
4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Patynik
led off with a walk of starter Jeff Phillips.
Navarez came on in relief and after Patynik worked
his way to third base on two ground outs, came home
to score on an infield single by Serrano. After
sophomore right fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) drew a walk,
freshman designated hitter
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) blooped a base
hit in front of right fielder Tyson Hawley, which
allowed Serrano to come home with the second run of
the inning.
Cerritos took a 2-1 lead
in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by
Schwarzenbach. The Seahawks scored three times in
the third inning on three hits and a walk off
McGregor before Dominguez came in to shut them down
the remainder of the game. |
