Mt. San Antonio College
jumped out to a 6-1 lead against the Cerritos
College baseball team on Saturday afternoon and held
on for a 6-5 South Coast Conference win in a game
played at Kincaid Field. The Falcons drop to 15-9
overall and 6-2 in conference action with the loss,
while the Mounties are now 14-12-1 overall and 6-2
in the SCC. Cerritos will now travel to Compton
College on 2:00 p.m. to start the second and third
rounds of conference play.
After the Mounties took
their lead against sophomore starting pitcher
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS), sophomore
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
came on in relief and pitched five innings of
one-hit ball.
The Falcons slowly worked
their way back into the game, scoring two runs in
the seventh to chase starter Jonny Bravo, who held
Cerritos in check for the majority of the game. In
the eighth, the Falcons picked up a single run and
got to within 6-5 in the ninth before ending the
game with runners at first and second base. In the
ninth, Schwarzenbach, who started the game as the
designated hitter, reached base on an error. He was
moved to third base on two wild pitches by reliever
Jon Ruppel and scored on a base hit by sophomore
first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS). After
sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) reached base on an error by
third baseman Sam Neibla, his third and the team’s
fifth error of the game, Cerritos had one last
chance to tie the contest. But sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) grounded out to
end the game.
Mt. San Antonio scored
three runs in each of the third and fourth innings
off Van Doren, as they strung together their hits.
By contrast, Cerritos worked to get on base, thanks
in part to four walks, a hit batter and five errors,
while leaving 12 runners on base. The Mounties did
their damage in the third inning after two outs were
recorded. Neibla and Lorenzo Macias each singled
before Nick Fuentes drove in Neibla, while freshman
center fielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS)
overran the ball for an error, which allowed Macias
to come around to score. Ryan Perez then singled in
the third run of the inning.
It was more of the same
in the fourth inning, as Neibla drove in the first
run of the inning in the fourth with two outs,
before Fuentes collected a two-run single with the
bases loaded before Van Doren got out of the inning.
On the day, Patynik went
2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, while
freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) was 1-for-3 with
two runs scored and two walks. For the Mounties,
Fuentes was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Neibla
also had two hits. |
