The Cerritos College
baseball team opened up a 4-0 lead against Compton
College in their South Coast Conference baseball
game on Wednesday and held on for a 5-4 victory to
keep the team a half game out of first place. With
the win, the Falcons are now 16-9 overall and 7-2 in
conference play, while the Tartars fell to 10-16
overall and 2-7 in the conference. The two teams
play again on Thursday at Kincaid Field, as the
remaining conference games are home-and-home series.
Taking advantage of five
Compton errors, the Falcons scored single runs in
the first and fourth innings, while adding solo runs
in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. After the
Tartars scored three runs off freshman starter
Kevin
Camacho (Santa Fe HS) in the eighth
inning, Cerritos got their insurance run in the
ninth as sophomore outfielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) led off with
a single. Sophomore pitcher
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS), who came on
in relief of Camacho in the eighth, sacrificed the
runner over before sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) singled home Van Doren with his
third hit of the day.
Camacho lasted 7 1/3
innings to earn his sixth win of the season, as he
allowed seven hits and struck out six, while
McGregor set down five of the six batters he faced
to garner his first save on the year.
Freshman outfielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) collected
three hits, scored twice and stole two bases, while
freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) drove in runs on
both of his hits, including a two-out base hit in
the eighth which gave the team a 4-0 advantage. |
