For the second day in a
row, the Cerritos College baseball team used timely
hitting and solid pitching to record a South Coast
Conference win against Compton College. On
Wednesday, the Falcons posted a 5-3 win with 12 hits
and strong pitching, while on Thursday, they
recorded a 6-2 victory at Kincaid Field, thanks to
the pitching of freshman
Robbie
Dominguez (El Rancho HS) and
sophomore
Sheldon
McGregor (La Mirada HS). The victory
improves the team’s record to 17-9 on the year and
8-2 in the SCC, while the Tartars dropped to 10-17
overall and 2-8. On Saturday, Cerritos will host
Pasadena City College at noon.
Dominguez limited Compton
to just six hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work, while
McGregor came on for the second day in a row to earn
a save, as he set down all seven batters he faced.
On addition to the
Falcons hitting, they also took advantage of five
more Tartar errors and 10 stolen bases, which led to
three of their runs. In the bottom of the first
inning, freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth HS) led off with a
base hit and stole second base. A pick-off attempt
by Compton pitcher Edmund Aguirre was thrown wildly,
which allowed Baslow to come all the way around to
score. Two more errors in the fifth inning helped
lead the team to one of their three runs. Baslow led
off with a walk and stole second base before coming
home on a triple by sophomore right fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS). Sophomore
designated hitter
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
followed with a sacrifice fly to give the team a 3-0
lead. Sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) then reached first base when
Compton first baseman Jerry Quiones dropped a throw
on a ground ball. Luyben then stole second base,
moved to third base on another pick-off attempt
throwing error by Aguirre, which set up an RBI
single by freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS).
After the Tartars scored
two runs in the top of the seventh inning, the
Falcons responded with two of their own.
Schwarzenbach and Luyben led off with consecutive
singles before Rodriguez sacrificed them over. After
sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) was
intentionally walked, sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) hit a ground
ball to second base, where the throw was wild,
allowing all runners to be safe, with Schwarzenbach
scoring. Freshman center fielder Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS) followed with a run-scoring
sacrifice fly to round out the scoring.
On the day, Baslow went
2-for-3 with two walks and stole four bases, while
Luyben was also 2-for-3 with a walk and three stolen
bases. |
