After opening up a 3-0
lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Cerritos
College baseball team had to fight to hold on for
their 4-3 South Coast Conference win against
Pasadena City College Saturday afternoon at Kincaid
Field. With the win, the Falcons improved to 18-9
overall and 9-2 in the SCC, while the Lancers
dropped to 11-16 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
The two teams will meet up again at Jackie Robinson
Field in Pasadena on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
Cerritos took their 3-0
lead to start the game as freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) was hit by a
pitch with one out. After stealing second base, he
came home to score on a double by sophomore second
baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS). Sophomore designated hitter
Brad Schwarzenbach (St. John Bosco HS)
then followed with a single, while a walk to
freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) loaded the
bases. Sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) was hit by
a pitch to force in a run before sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) drove in the
third run with a base hit.
Sophomore starter
Phil
Van Doren (La Mirada HS) was cruising
along through the first 4 2/3 innings, with his only
blemish being a walk in the fourth inning that came
around to score without the benefit of a hit. Van
Doren was throwing a no-hitter until three
consecutive Lancer singles loaded the bases with two
outs in the fifth inning. He then got a ground ball
hit back to him to end the inning. Pasadena cut the
deficit to 4-2 in the sixth inning on a single by
Gabriel Chavez, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a
run-scoring single by Matt Ayers.
In the previous inning,
the Falcons opened up a 4-1 lead after freshman
right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO HS) led off the fifth inning by
being hit by a pitch. Montgomery sacrificed him to
second base and Moore came home on a double by
Patynik. That would be all the offense for the
Falcons on the day, who left the bases loaded twice
and finished the game with 12 runners left on base.
The Lancers scored
another single run in the seventh inning, as Gabriel
Barrientos led off with a single, stole second base
and then scored on a single by Chris Flores. Van
Doren was removed on the mound by Schwarzenbach,
with Van Doren staying in the game and assuming
right fielder duties. Schwarzenbach earned his first
save of the season by setting down eight of the nine
men he faced, including a ground ball to Patynik to
end the game with a runner on second base.
On the day, Van Doren
picked up his fourth win of the season after
pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, while
Pasadena City pitcher Erik Lomeli went six innings
in the loss. |
