Over the last two
seasons, the Cerritos College baseball team has had
a hard time figuring out cross-town rival Long Beach
City College. On Thursday afternoon, the Viking
picked up their fourth consecutive win over the
Falcons by posting an 8-0 South Coast Conference
victory at Kincaid Field. With the win, Long Beach
City takes a 1 ½-game lead over Cerritos in
conference play with a 23-6 overall mark and 11-1 in
the SCC. As for the Falcons, they drop to 19-10
overall and 10-3 in the conference and look to break
their personal losing streak to LBCC on Saturday
when they travel to Joe Hicks Field for a noon game.
Leading Long Beach City
in their win was the pitching of Steve Conradi, who
went the distance and scattered five hits to pick up
his fifth win of the season. At the plate, left
fielder Mike Harris drove in three runs, including a
two-run double in the fourth inning to give the
Vikings a 3-0 lead, and had two hits and three RBI
on the day.
Long Beach City scored a
solo run in the second inning, then followed that
with three more in the fourth inning before scoring
single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. They
closed out the scoring with two more runs in the
ninth.
In the second inning, the
Falcons had runners at first and second with no outs
after freshman designated hitter
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) singled with
sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS) reaching on an error. After a fly ball
out, Rodriguez was thrown out trying to steal third
base for the second out. Sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La Mirada HS) then
singled before sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier HS) grounded into a
fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Conradi struck out five
and did not allow a walk for the Vikings, who also
received three hits from designated hitter Jon
Rodriguez. On the day, Long Beach City collected 11
hits, with eight of the nine starters recording at
least one hit. |
