With a chance to secure at least
a share of second place in the South Coast
Conference, the Cerritos College baseball team
dropped a 5-4 decision to Los Angeles Harbor College
at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the
loss, the two teams are tied for second place at
15-7, while Mt. San Antonio College is now 14-8
after their 11-0 loss to El Camino College. The Falcons
will now travel to Mt. SAC on Thursday for a 2:30
p.m. contest before closing out the regular season
against the Mounties at home at 2:30 p.m. The 5-4
loss was the second in a row to LA Harbor, while the
last three Falcon losses this season have been by
one run. They are now 7-7 on the year in one-run
games.
Leading 4-3 heading into the top
of the eighth inning, the Mounties got back-to-back
singles by Richard Arcineiga and Tyson Hawley to
start the inning. After a ground out to second
baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS)
advanced the runners, a ground ball to sophomore
shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier
HS) went under his glove, which allowed
both runners to score. The Falcons broke a 3-3 tie
in the bottom of the seventh inning after freshman
right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO
HS) singled with one out. He moved to
second on a ground out and advanced to third on a
wild pitch by Harbor pitcher Jeff Phillips. Luyben
then hit a bouncer to Seahawk first baseman Raul
Landeros, who was unable to handle the ball for an
error.
The Falcons opened a 2-0 lead
with single runs in the first and third innings.
Freshman left fielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth
HS), making the most of his lead-off
role, walked, stole second base and scored on an
error in the first stanza. In the third, he walked,
moved to second base on a sacrifice by Luyben and
then scored on a double by sophomore
Phil
Van Doren (La
Mirada HS).
In the top of the fourth inning,
freshman starter
Kevin
Camacho (Santa
Fe HS) struggled with his control, as
two singles and three walks led to two runs before
the first out was recorded. He settled down and
struck out the next two batters before getting the
third out on a ground out. The teams then traded
runs until LA Harbor scored their two in the eighth
inning off Van Doren, who came on in the seventh
inning for Camacho.
On the day, Baslow scored three
runs, while Van Doren and Luyben each had RBI
doubles. Moore had two hits and scored one run. |
