Despite their 7-0 loss to Mt. San
Antonio College on Friday afternoon to close out the
regular season, the Cerritos College baseball team
appears to be headed for the Southern California
Regional Playoffs for the first time sine the 2003
campaign. The Falcons tied for second place in the
conference with Los Angeles Harbor College, after
they dropped a 16-3 decision to East Los Angeles
College in their finale. Cerritos is now 27-16 on
the year and finished 16-8 in the conference.
The teams will be selected for
the playoffs on Sunday afternoon with 18 teams
advancing to the post season. The top four seeds
will host a four-team double-elimination tournament
over next Friday and Saturday, while the 15-18 seeds
will have to play on Tuesday in order to advance to
the double-elimination portion of the playoffs. The
Falcons have won more state championships (9) than
any other school in the state, with their last one
coming in 1989. They reached the state championship
game in 1995, but were defeated by Santa Ana
College.
In the loss to the Mounties,
Cerritos feel behind early and never threatened on
the day. Mt. SAC scored single runs in the first
three innings to chase sophomore starter
Phil
Van Doren (La
Mirada HS). Freshman
Robbie
Dominguez (El
Rancho HS) allowed four runs (three
earned) in 4 1/3 innings, while sophomore
Don
Bodewig (Brea
Olinda HS) set down all six batters he
faced.
The only offensive threat my the
Falcons came in the seventh inning after sophomore
third baseman
Ryan
Bateman (Santa
Fe HS) was hit by a pitch before
freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS) doubled. After sophomore first
baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La
Mirada HS) drew a walk to load the
bases, freshman right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO
HS) grounded into a double play to end
the inning. Cerritos had just four hits on the day,
with sophomore second baseman
Dan Luyben
(Lakewood HS)
collecting two of the hits. |
